Still irked by people and articles claiming that this is an effect seen on "expensive DSLRs". Depth of field has little to do with the price of the camera (sensor size aside) and much to do with focal length and aperture.

I guess it doesn't sound as fancy saying that it is trying to mimic a cheap $100 50mm f/1.8.

I like Live Photos very much. Seeing AND hearing my nephew laugh after I pressed the "only smiling" photo of him is an even more nostalgic feeling than a simple photo.. I don't use Portrait Mode very much, but I like where things are going.

I like it too because it lets you feel the moment again. Like a small fraction of the memory in your mind. A mini video if you will. Not too much to take away the joy of remembering it but just enough to have you close your eyes and reminisce. It's really nice.

Awesome feature but doesn't work when I have to step back to take a photo of 3 mates in one photo.

Just got my 7 plus today after using my long awaited upgrade( had since 2012 due to not wanting to lose my grandfathered unlimited data with vzw) and can't wait to try this

Love Portrait mode - get some beautiful photos.
You ned to use it in a specific way to get the best results and it does have trouble with certain things like hair in the wind and stuff.
But it will only get better as the tech moves on.

MR never ceases to amaze me. Apple brings some cool features to the iPhone and all the photo snobs come out to rag on it. When you guys figure out how to comfortably fit a DSLR into the front pocket of a pair of jeans, I'll join you guys and sing the same chorus. Until then, you should stop being so defensive and learn to appreciate how far SMARTPHONE CAMERA technology has come, and the amazing pictures and videos you can now take with them.

Apl does note have leading Smartphone camera tech (regardless of what they claim) Zeiss does. Thankfully for the Apl glasses Apl punted and partnered with Zeiss your eyes will be thankful.

I'll keep it simple and say I enjoy the features on my PHONE. It's great to have a bag tricks with me when I want to whip a photo on the whim.

Attached a few photos as an example.

I'll be honest, the upgrade in RAM, camera, 1080p screen, they really didn't make it worth it to me.

Don't get me wrong. It's a great phone. I'm just using my 6s right now and I sorely miss the size. Also for some reason, the 6s screen looks better to my eyes.

My 7+ is definitely getting flipped by either being sold or traded in to JUMP with T-Mobile. It's not a keeper.

My theory:

If you can't adjust to the size of the Plus, then you will never be able to appreciate the other features the Plus has to offer, being the cumbersome size for your hands will outweigh any other appreciations you might notice. It starts with aesthetics and adjusting, then taking the time to familiarize yourself with the features it has to offer.

It's no different than owning a pair of shoes you find attractive, if they're not comfortable, You won't wear them and resort to something else that fits comfortably, no matter how much you want to like them . Same concept.

See I don't like Live Photos at all. I found the feature lacking and never really useful to me. I do find portrait mode useful however. That's the cool thing about features :)

Some of us use this and others use that. I don't understand the sentiment towards having options from users in these forums. Maybe I just have better things to feel nasty towards thee days.

You're right, cos Apple developed software and silicon play absolutely no role in smartphone camera technology whatsoever.

950 vs 7+
Ok lets start with 8MP deficit in 7+
Now Lumia Camera 5 or ProShot exceed the software capabilities of Apple camera app
I have a dedicated camera button AND SD card support
CPU 808 vs A10 read and weep https://versus.com/en/apple-a10-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-808-msm8992

Price? $298 vs $769 (both 32GB)
I prefer 5.2" fits in my pocket.

Camera phone zoom test: Lumia 1020/950 vs Apple iPhone 7 Plus
"I want to note that I still suspect the 950 is the best smartphone camera in the world, over all lighting conditions and use cases - it's just that zooming is its Achilles heel. "

Anyone can cherry pick a few sentences. Except when you look around, Lumia consistently gets poor marks like this review...

"There’s no easy way to say this, but like the smaller Lumia 950, the Lumia 950 XL design is simply boring. It’s uninspired, plasticky, and looks like any other low-end Lumia that Microsoft has been churning out over the past year. If you’re someone that believes Windows Phone is dead, this is the casket you’d bury it in."

"Microsoft still hasn’t perfected the software algorithms to comfortably take a photo with automatic processing to the point where I trust I can point and shoot."

In America, we have a saying; you get what you pay for. That's clearly the case of the Lumia vs the iPhone. You can read the full Lumia review here...

As for the CPU, my point about silicon was that Apple fine tunes its software with custom hardware to get the most out of their cameras. But since you brought up performance, A10 is absolutely the gold standard. Even the upcoming snapdragon 835 (due out this spring) can't beat Apple's 6 month old A10 so it's a safe bet that the 808 would be left choking on A10's dust...
