I just switched from an s3 about two weeks ago. At max I would get about 5hrs of usage out the thing before I was running for a charger. My 5s allows me to go all day without needing to recharge it. I get about 11-13hrs of usage out of it before the battery is at 1%.

I personally don't think they need to increase battery life, its far better than most android based phones IMO.

Not sure how you compare 11-13hrs to S3 5hrs usage. If you continuous use S3 with screen on 5hrs is about right. But it is impossible you can get 11-13 hrs using Ip5s with SCREEN-ON. I doubt you can get much more Ip5s screen-on time than S3.

Like many have said, the Iphone usage time in Settings is just a nonsense figure. Usage should mean when you are actively using the phone (i.e SCREEN MUST BE ON). But this usage figure register big values even if you don't touch the phone for the whole day. I suspect Apple didnt include screen on time but this nonsense figure to give a better impression of battery life on iphone.

Android gives "SCREEN ON" time which is much better measure as screen uses the most power when it is on which correspond to when you are using the phone.

In these endurance tests there isnt much difference betw S3 and 5s:

Iphone5s got 54 hrs

whereas the S3 got 50hrs.

A smartphone is a computer that makes calls essentially. Why would I buy one for how it looks? It's one thing that should be bought for function.

And I DO buy clothes that fit, and the note 2 fits comfortably in the pocket. try again.

I guess wearing a watch that costs more than a few bucks is another thing you think is ridiculous?

I can't tell if you're being silly on purpose, or if you really don't get it. Either way you're completely uninteresting to discuss with. Good bye.

My iPhone 5 registers less than ten minutes of usage overnight (DND turned off), and when I was sick a few days ago I barely put down my phone all day and got 10.5+ hours of on screen time (wifi surfing, gaming, reading, watching videos both on the phone and streaming, texting...).

Claiming 11 hours of on screen usage is impossible on the 5S is simply silly. Actually, I'd say if you can't get more than five hours on screen time you should have the phone checked out, because the battery might be toast.

I was on a course last week and three of the people on my course were charging their phones at lunchtime - all iPhones (admittedly two were 4/4s and one was a 5S). I asked why they carried their chargers and they said it wouldn't last them their journey home otherwise. I presume this is the age of the devices (battery degradation) as I've never had that problem but then I don't have a phone for more than a year generally. Of note though, no one else had to charge their non-iPhone phones.

The iPhone has the best battery life I've got from a smartphone and that's mostly in part due to the optimized software. I've had a door devices with physically larger batteries that did not last as long as my iPhone. I'm glad they don't just cram a larger battery in there. But if they did I could easily make my iPhone last days.

The exact same tasks were performed with my S3. Listening to music and watching YouTube videos. Hell listening to music for an hour on the S3 would drain my battery by more than 20% and that's with the screen off. I couldn't leave my S3 off the charger overnight because the battery could literally go from 90% to 0. I woke up one morning wondering why my alarm didn't go off.

I understand that the usage is measured in a different way for the iPhone. However, I'm performing the same tasks on two different products and getting better results out of one. I'm just speaking on my personal experiences.

I noticed the culprit for for me is Bluetooth. I had Wifi and Bluetooth ON overnight. Battery went from 100% to 93%. Last night, had Bluetooth OFF, still at 100%.

Battery life was prefect prior to upgrading to iOS7. Never had to charge my phone daily; usually every other day. Now, it's a daily requirement.

Gsmarena ? The most biased (toward Samsung) site on the web ?
I just trust anandtech about comparatives ....

I can see the battery life is for regular users, not us :)

I have many casual users that have no problem with battery life, which is me if I have no need to surf the web or such.

So I just have the nice monoprice.com battery backup with the 2.1 amp iPad level output. I can charge up my iPhone in my pocket as I walk whenever I need to, and the battery's over 5 amph capacity means I just charge it up once a week.

So nice to have a 10% phone a half hour earlier and pull it out 70-80% charged.

I use my iPhone 5s as a computer terminal sometimes - my power needs just aren't reasonable for Apple to chase.

Then that is not typical battery behavior. I used the s3 for more than a year and it had never drained overnight or has such atrocious battery life as yours.

Standby is about 0.6-1.3% per hour drop with data and sync on plus widgets and background processes.

Surfing + constant use of 4G data with screen on at auto brightness typically drains 12-18% per hour.

The battery will get larger as the screen gets bigger. I hope they actually add capacity beyond what the new components will use. The phone doesn't have to get any thinner it's almost anorexic.

Battery life is my biggest need for any cell phone
I would love a iOS phone that can last 2 days without charging
I don't even care about any other feature at the moment just the battery life thing
