Hey I got the product red Apple Silicone case for my iPhone 8 Plus. I've taken it off a couple of times and have already noticed a couple of chunks taken out of the case. Do I have a defective one?

To be clear I am very gentile with my phones and phone cases.

I have not had that issue with mine. I have a black and a product red. Switch back and forth almost daily and they still look brand new.

Chunks fall out only when you drop it on hard surfaces like cement. Not from removal of the case from your phone.

Actually, I have a product (red) silicone case for my 7+ and indeed the bottom corner can become "broken" if you will from repeated installation / removal. They fit so snugly that the silicone (or whatever material we call it today) rubs a bit on the bottom left/right corner.

edit: I could post a pic, and I would guess it looks just like the OPs case.

I wonder if this is what the OP is talking about. This happened to mine after, oh, I dunno. 5-6 removals / installations (I tend to go back and forth of whether I want a case on it or not.

The silicone case I have on my iPhone 6 that I use for work has chunks coming out of it but that is after using it for about 2 years before it started to do that.

I have the dark olive one for my 8+ and I take the case off twice a day to swap the SIM card in and out from my work phone and I haven’t had anything happen so far.

What macTW said as well as if you take your phone out of your case a lot, this happened to my white silicon case for my iPhone 6s+.

Edit: Looks like other posters identified this too.

Mine did that originally, until I learned how to do it. Then no more breaking. Takes some practice.

I went with leather awhile back. No issues, and no more dust magnet.

The Apple leather case is an amazing case. Had saddle tan leather for 6S+ and picked up same for my 8+ today. Also have silicone.. isn’t close. Leather.

I have always used a silicone case. Yes it does Chip, but it easily lasts 2 years. That said, can those who are using Apple's leather case confirm if it provides as good fall protection as the silicone case? For my iPhone X, I might try out the leather case.

how is the protection for falls compared to the Silicone case?

I have an iPhone 6. Silicone case. Got a gouge at the right top and right bottom. Never been dropped since in the case. However, I got the case about 2 years ago and chalked it up to normal wear and tear. If yours is already screwed up, I’d get a replacement.

Cheers.

Incorrect.

I dropped my iPhone onto concrete and ceramic tile with both cases and never any damage to the iPhone. I don’t have any damage to the leather case either. Seems to be more resilient than the silicon one.

Yeah, it's very similar. Almost a chunk missing.

I agree with this poster. Once ATT gave me a replacement I was much more careful with how I put it on and take it off. No issues now.

That happened to me too with the black silicon case for my 6+ after a couple re-installations. Didn’t bother with the warranty as I dropped the phone shortly after and a larger chunk pealed off.
I had the green silicon case before that, but no issues there.

The leather case did seem to handle drops better when I had it on my 6s. Where the silicon often loses chunks of silicon, the leather one gets scuffs and scratches. It does not peal off and the scuffs age with the rest of the case nicely.

I ended up bringing back my olive green, much to the odd anger and dismay of the manager of the apple store. It as completely discolored, almost as if there were handprints in it.
