The MD301LL/A is a newer Navy Leather case that they released more recently (late last year I think and not specifically for the new iPad launch) ... The MC947LL/A is the older model.

The MC947LL/A has a bit of a greyish/blue tint to it, while the MD301LL/A has more of a royal navy blue to it. Check the link below for pics and comparisons.

Wow, good catch...I really like the current Navy Blue that the Apple Store sells...UGH thought I would be saving 15 dollars, haha.

I'm reading in the news that the older smart cover model is not working with the iPad. Ugh. And I ordered the black leather cover this afternoon. So I'll have to wait and see if it works...

What is it? Luck of the draw? Someone on this list wrote that his cover worked. Why do some work and some don't?

If it don't work you can probably just return it back. I guess the earlier ones, the polarity of the magnet was random and the Ipad 2 didn't care about polarity. The new ones for the new iPad have to the polarity right or it won't work.

Wirelessly posted

When i placed my pre-order for two iPads, I ordered a red leather smart cover and a blue poly smart cover. Both of those had the new MD3xxx/A numbers, so it's not just the navy smart cover that was renumbered. I don't know if this is due to the new polarity or not. As it seems to be hit or miss whether the sleep/wake function works on some of the 3rd party cases that were released early, I've been wondering myself, if some of the older smart covers could have the problem too.

SOME of the older genuine Apple Smart Covers are not triggering the sleep/wake function on the new iPad (3). It all depends if a particular cover was assembled with the trigger magnet in the correct polarity orientation to be compatible with the new iPad (3). See the link in my signature for the story and a video demonstration.

BTW, those news sites got the story from me! :)

^ This. TKEik683 needs to clarify where the indication is that it is fake.

You need to click on the XX new link and then read the comments from each supplier.

The supplier in question had this comment:

"Genuine (real) leather, OEM product. Not an APPLE product. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW IPAD (IPAD 3)."

he appears to be gone now but you should look there every time to ensure that you know what you are getting from all the sellers.

It looks like the listing on Amazon is the same for all sellers.

Just read and watched through this. Well done.

Ordered a black leather smart cover for the MacMall link on this thread yesterday afternoon and got it in just now (amazingly fast shipping and it was free UPS Ground). Anyway, cover looks great, sleep/wake works perfectly and for $54 shipped it seems like a pretty good deal.
