Convertibles kill tablets, not smartphones.

Smartphones killed media players.

I'm not saying it's the main factor, but Apple's long refresh cycle for Ipads isn't helping. Update the 12.9 and you'll get my money Apple. :)

I really don't think shortening the refresh cycle is going to help them sell more iPads, by and large. Most people aren't going to buy a new large-screen device that's primarily a consumption device every year, every two years, or even every three years. iPad sales were declining even when they had a much shorter refresh cycle than they do today.

I think tablets are the kind of device that will stay in a family for a long time and get passed down to kids after a number of years -- even well after the device no longer receives iOS updates. That's exactly what I did with my iPad third-gen cellular model. I put a T-Mobile SIM in it and that tablet has 200 MB of free data per month (the tablet is mostly on Wi-Fi so cellular hardly gets used) and it is my kid's iPad now.

iPads are really just like a computer. No need to upgrade. I'm still using my 4-year old iPad. And from the looks of it Apple wants me to keep using it with their lackluster upgrade iPad options.

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad in 2010, it was magical. We were all ready to enter the new form of personal computing. Now? We never could do enough with the iPad to replace our Mac. Mac sales barely saw any growth while tablets are in decline. I mostly blame this on the company Tim Cook is leading, turning into a one-trick pony with the phone.

Fiancee just got an iPad Pro. It actually matches the speed of the PC now. It is actually portable and useable now. She's really happy with it.

Apple need to find a way to obsolete iPads with
Apple should make a Mac tablet.
And you'd be right here complaining about how horrible an experience it would be. THE MAC IS NOT A TOUCH FRIENDLY INTERFACE. I wish people would quit with the "Mac Tablet" talk.

What the tablet needs is a re-working of iOS to make it better than a Mac for certain things. Taking Mac OS and slapping a touch screen on top of it is IDIOTIC. Microsoft did it 20 years ago and it was a massive flop. It was only when they adapted Windows to have touch friendly UI that it even became slightly popular.

I just don't understand the lack of a Mac Mini update... I feel that Apple would make a killing with a HDMI stick mini...

Content creation. File system access. Ports.

Not only can my iPad NOT do everything my MacBook can do, it can't even do 1/8 of what my MacBook can do. iPad is a great content consumption device, but a lousy content creation device - while it can be used to create some content, it's mediocre.

Don't get me wrong, I love the iPad I have, but there is no incentive to replace it anytime soon. Apple really needs to step up their game with the iPad's capabilities, and I don't mean just a faster version of the same thing, if they want to sell more of them.

Why would this surprise anyone?
People don't upgrade their iPads annually or even every two years. They're more like desktops or laptops. My 1st get iPad Air still works fine. I don't plan to replace it until next year.

It doesn't mean the product is not desirable or not on folks wish lists.

When I'm online, most of the time, I want to type, when I want to type I dont use my iPad.

I will buy one when it gets:

1. OLED display
2. 3D Touch
3. Bezeless design (like rumored new iPhone 8)
4. 500gb of storage
5. Multiple user sign in
6. Mouse support

And it wouldn't hurt to get a discount if you also bought both the pencil and keyboard. Do this, and I'll preorder one. I'm guessing most of this will get done by 2018.

We have an iPad 2 and a 9.7 pro in use at the moment and I don't think we will bother upgrading even the 2 moment as we don't use them enough.

Wouldn't hold my breath for those last two.

Yeah, as many have said, once you have an iPad that fits your needs you just don't often need to upgrade. It'd have to be an obscene improvement for me to consider upgrade from my iPad Pro 9.7. Same thing happened in the DSLR market.. People got great hardware.. No reason to upgrade anymore. Sales eb and flow.. Apple shouldn't be concerned.

As long as the hardware is supported this is better for the consumer in many ways. We don't have to replace our devices constantly!

I believe the chief reason is that Apple practically created the modern tablet market. In the beginning, everyone who wanted a tablet would get one from Apple, hence the exponential growth. Now, everyone who wants one has one, so we are gradually moving towards a PC-like replacement cycle, where the majority of users upgrade their iPads only every 4-5 years.

Let's look at it this way. Fewer people are buying the iPad mini, but revenue for the 9.7" and 12.9" iPads actually grew. This means that Apple will likely look to eventually phasing out the iPad mini. Once this is done, the larger iPads will be key to growth in the iPad market once again. Makes sense that Apple is pushing the larger iPads so aggressively in their latest advertisements.

The iPad is down but not out, and news of its demise are way exaggerated.

Prices also increased by quite a margin for iPad pros. Using revenue is misleading . What talking about individuals who update thier iPads, it's unit sold.

Not sure how you can assume that once apple kills the iPad mini, people will spend much much more on iPad pros, more believable is that people who had minis will justify purchasing iPhone "plus" .

iPad pros are being heavily advertised cause apple cares about revenue, and with the tablet markert dieing (people not upgrading) apple is trying to sell the iPads as computer replacemts and justifying big price increases. My iPad Pro is .....a giant iPad. I can use it as a PC replacement, but using my MacBook Pro is actually productive, a screwdriver can be used as a hammer....

Yes, the vast swaths of technologically illiterate consumers are just clamoring for a form specific OS....because the vast majority of users could even tell you what an OS is....

Because when the "vast swaths of technologically illiterate consumers" saw MacOS1.0, they saw what they could do with a computer; things they never saw with a CLI.

Just because end users cannot fathom/imagine it, does not mean geniuses who work at these companies cannot dream of and make it, and in doing so, give end users a reason to buy said products(hardware).

The iPad is a great product. They just keep going and going and going. I only upgrade if I give one away to family because they all continue to work fine. Very happy with the ipads.

I've had two iPads my whole lifespan, a great working and still utterly good performing iPad 2, and now the much greater and still super performing iPad Air 2. I have no reasons to buy a new iPad, iPad 2, or "re-buy" the iPad Air 2, that they released the other month. There are no massive improvements, super amazing features or whatever that makes me feel like the iPads I've had are actually worth getting rid of. They don't break, they perform great, and I use them every day.

I guess, if they put in augmented reality, 3d-touch, pencil on all, 4k resolution screen, .. I will start saving again. Right now, shrug

No, they won't replace computers for everyone. But they still sold 2x as many iPads (8.9M) as they did Macs (4.2M).

When you consider most ipads are under $1000 and the only mac under $1000 is the 2014 mini which is a downgrade from to 2012 mini, is it really such a surprise?

It's amazing Apple sells that many macs. Imagine if they updated them once in a while. Compare the Skull Canyon intel NUC to the mac mini (or any other desktop mac available). 4.2M macs sold is a testament to how much people love the platform.

Why are you so attached to iOS? The MB seems to offer everything you want and at a lower price once you add the pencil and keyboard.
