The Metropolitan Museum of Art today shared details on its annual 2016 Gala and Costume Institute exhibition, which will be sponsored by Apple with Jony Ive serving as a co-chair. The theme for the 2016 event, which will take place on May 2, is "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology."

The Met Gala, held each year, is a fund raising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute. The theme chosen for the gala each year reflects the theme of the Costume Institute exhibition and dictates what Met Gala attendees should wear. Last year's theme was "China: Through the Looking Glass."

According to Vogue, this year's event will focus on the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion, featuring more than 100 pieces of fashion. Techniques like embroidery, pleating, and lacework will be juxtaposed with technologies like laser cutting and thermo shaping.

The intersection of technology and fashion is a fitting choice for the year Apple is sponsoring the event, as the company came out with its first fashion item, the Apple Watch, in 2015.
"Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made," explains Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute. "But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other."
The 2016 Met Gala, in addition to being sponsored by Apple, will be hosted by co-chairs Jony Ive, Taylor Swift, and Idris Elba. Anna Wintour, Nicolas Ghesquiére, Karl Lagerfeld, and Miuccia Prada will serve as honorary chairs.

This is basically the Oscars of the fashion world. I wonder how much it's costing Apple to sponsor.

Somebody want to photoshop the Apple logo on Fonzie's face?
I fully acknowledge that I may be being short sighted, but is this sort of sponsorship/marketing trend of late really necessary?
Numerous journals have commented that the Apple Watch hasn't been sold as merely a piece of technology, but also as a piece of fashion. But since I don't read Vogue it's hard to tell how much that's true.

No hover boards, but we get to wear giant versions of those roll-on sunglasses you get from the optometrist.

Donou think the models stop at Targé to pick up their apple watches?
I didn't see this on target's website:

Nor this:

Both of which are much more in line with what's actually worn at the Met Gala. Of course, you may need to sell an Apple Watch edition or two to afford a ticket.

Let me show you Derelique. It is a fashion, a way of life inspired by the very homeless, the vagrants, the crack whores that make this wonderful city so unique.

Brilliant comment. Apple is just coasting on brand recognition now. Dumbed down, glitchy products will erode that brand recognition. Steve Jobs succeeded at something incredibly rare: profiting greatly on the sale of quality products.

Brand recognition is trendy now - especially in the tech industry - and Apple's won't last like GE's or Coca-Cola's has. Just look at how Microsoft has faded away in the public mind. Turns out the iPhone and the mountains of profit it made might have been a curse.

But I guess better to have loved and lost.

You're right. It takes a very special foo...person to pay 10k plus for that watch. Targé isn't the right place. My mistake.
Haute couture is incredibly expensive. The apple watch edition is comparably priced, or if you're "Rhianna", an absolute bargain.

It may sound strange, but these fashion galas are all about symbolism. The theme of the "moth", "butterfly" and others are carefully laid out in order to be some kind of inside-joke for satanists and other elitist groups.
If you don't see the symbolism, you might ask yourself why people would even wear that. In the end though, it's just like another mainstream music video with baphomet symbolism, hand-over-eye, chessboard-floor, black-and-white, butterflies and so on.

If you think this is ********, read up the meanings of those things. It's scary.

I was lucky enough to be able to witness last years Met Gala red carpet first-hand (which was a truly amazing experience for someone who likes couture), and hope to do the same this season. Some of the things worn are ridiculous but I guess that's part of the fun of it? Most of the things created for a haute couture runway will never be worn anyone. Wonder what kind of product placement Apple will have in place. My boyfriend and I were actually offered legit-gala tickets through his employer (fashion editorial) but we regretfully had to turn them down, as we couldn't afford any clothes that we felt would be appropriate. Hell, I'm going to be out of place just watching with my measly Apple Watch Sport!
