It probably is but everybody and anybody called it "The World Cup" until the 90s probably. Maybe it's due to the proliferation of "world cups" to lesser sports. There is only one real World Cup which is synonymous with football.
“die WM” in German … I grew with up that. Never heard anyone say “die FIFA WM”, still not in 2022 when I was back there. The people I know here who follow soccer refer to it as “ The World Cup. Those who don’t follow the sport probably don’t even know what FIFA stands for. When I’m asked, I say “Financially Insatiable Football Association”. I love Fussball, I love the World Cup, I dislike the current FIFA.
