This new iMac with 27 or 30 screen seems like the biggest challenge for Apple. Close to the TITAN project. They have been working on it for how many years? :D

On a serious note, I do wait for 27 iMac. 30 might be too big and would not fit the space. And I'm tired working from laptop. More and more these days, I do prefer work at the dedicated space. But for some reason I could never enjoy working with external display.. iMac is just great. Only issue is 24 is too small nowadays and too weak.
I'm still using my 27 iMac Retina 5K from 2019. I'm on Sonoma and still enjoying the user experience for the most part. I agree with MacFarmer that even though the new 24 looks awesome, I need the bigger screen, and 27 is actually the perfect size for me. A 30/32 simply won't easily fit my work space. I'm going to be patient a bit longer and cross my fingers.

It has so much border they can easily do 32” making it bezel to bezel. 27” is extremely small, have been using a 43” for my PC for years. I don’t need that big, but definitely at least 32”.

A bigger iMac will be a Day 1 purchase.

Even if they shrink the bezels, the 32" is still going to be wider than the 27" iMac. Just look at the specs for the 32" XDR. I've seen it in person and it's got very narrow bezels, yet is still 3" wider than the iMac.

To me, 3" isn't very much (and I'd also like the add'l real estate of the 32"), but it might be too much for the other poster's space constraints.

By shrinking the bezels Apple could give us a 30” display without really increasing the size of the 27” iMac. 😉

Yeah, pretty much. The diagonal length of the 27" iMac's bezels is 1.5" If they shrunk those to 0.5" (the approximate bevel size on the 24.5" iMac), that would allow for a 29" display. So making it 30" would require only a small increase in size.

Apple working on a bigger iMac? Why now? They’re years too late for that. They could better develop a bigger/better standalone screen which is good and most importantly affordable.

People interested in a bigger iMac already moved on to other solutions.

If Apple wants their branding visible at anyone’s desktop, develop a standalone screen. The macmini is in my opinion a better solution than an all in one for that price. Screen will last longer than the computer.

But hey… Apple almost never delivers what people need or offer it years too late.

Does it not make sense for some of us, when our iMacs age out, never to buy an iMac again? Instead, get a really good monitor, a Studio Display "An immersive 27-inch 5K Retina display with outstanding camera and audio", and an M4 Mac Mini and never buy another monitor, or at least not buy one for a long time, but instead replace the M4 Mini every five years or so? That's the way I'm moving.

about this article...

i 've been thinking about this. i currently have an iMac Pro.

good computer, great screen. and therein lies the problem. monitors always remain viable longer than the computers.
the i mac pro's screen is still better than many current monitors out there but it's time for the computer to be replaced.
and with 'target monitor mode' a dead feature, i'll have no choice but to dump a great 5k screen and buy a new one.

so i kinda agree with apple's position about getting a mac mini or mac studio and hooking it up to a great monitor.
i'm not sure if i'll get an apple monitor or something else.

either way it's a shame and a waste.

I think there’s definitely a market for it, but personally I like the Mac mini better. I hate throwing away those beautiful displays when the iMacs get obsolete.
I recall that there are ways to make the screen work with other Macs so it isn't a total loss. However, there is little "green" about how Mac does biz trying to 'suggest' people get new macs every 2-3 years now.

The iMac used to support "Target Display Mode" but doesn't anymore. There are ways to perform surgery on the iMac and convert it to a dumb display, but that only works on certain models.

It is far better to buy a Mac mini and a separate display. In my case, I have a Mac mini connected to a 43" 4K TV on my desk. Amazing.

Without a display input to future proof it, there’s no way I’d buy a 30” iMac. Then, 3 or 4 years down the line, just buy a new Mac Mini, use target disk mode to set it up and then the Mini takes over.

Or just hook your old Time Machine disk to the new Mac mini and let migration assistant migrate your data...

I would prefer to do a clean setup however, you may want to see folks like Astropad and Duet who make it easy enough to use an iMac as a monitor.

Just quick browser look up for using iMac as a monitor only -

Granted it's years in the future, but there will come a time when this software no longer runs on your iMac because the OS it runs is too old. But that beautiful display could still be put to use.
