Love my old 11", but the 12" MacBook is better--bigger screen, smaller case, retina. The old 11" was always going to go away.

Sorry to see a cheaper option go away for those who CANNOT afford more. But seriously—wait and save up. Get that retina 12".

(Which will also come down in entry price over time.)

The apple of today has been about raising prices, not lowering them...
Kind of. I was able to go from a 128GB iPhone 6s to a 128GB iPhone 7 for $100 less. I think it's important to keep a lower price point in there for certain users and education. The MacBook will eventually fill the gap, probably higher than the current Air but lower than it is now. Probably around $1099, which is only $200 lower than it is now. And again, that won't happen for another year at least.

Love my 11" Air.......perfectly portable and is able to pick up where my iPad Air leaves off (these two allowing me to stay productive depending on what I have to do). Not looking forward to the day when I have to replace it now.

And the last one with MagSafe. :(

hqdefault.jpg

They should have just replaced MagSafe with one USB-C port to make everything compatible across the line.

Then again, no Lightning port, and still no Lightning to USB-C (or anything else) headphone adapters.

Don't hold your breath for that to happen.

They were on sale at a number of retailers like Best Buy for $999 at times last year in the weeks before Christmas, so it's already happened and likely will again this year too.

MagSafe, 12 hour battery, Tapered Design, and last but not least, built in dongles.

Introducing the old MacBook Air!

Really sad to see the MBA go down. It was probably the best all-around Mac laptop ever, IMO. Hopefully the new MB can come down to $999 and gain a little more performance soon, otherwise we may never see a value quite like the last-gen MBA.

Ah ****. I like my ultra portable 11" Air! What I'm I supposed to replace it with when it reaches the end of its life?

Well, selling a laptop with a 1366 x 768 display for $900-$1100 is pretty much criminal in 2016 so perhaps it's for the best to let it die now, instead continuing to keep it in the lineup forever past the point of justification like the 2012 non-retina Macbook pro

Getting rid of the 11" model is stupid. Its size is ideal and allows it to fit anywhere and is very popular with students. MBAs also allow you to upgrade to more powerful processors. Since I use a Thunderbolt monitor most of the time with it, I don't need the snazzy display. Just better graphic performance and more up-to-date connectivity. Apple has lost connection with it's audience. :(

I have a MB Air 11 with i7 and 500 GB, 8 GB and had it hooked up to a Thunderbolt monitor. It was like having a really good desktop that I can take anywhere with me as a portable.

I'm interested in a 13" Air but won't pay full price for it, will wait for a good discount, it still seems like it would be still a usable machine for a few years

Apple did not update the MacBook Air line as expected today, signaling that it will slowly phase out the MacBook Air machines in favor of the MacBook and MacBook Pro lineups.

While there is no new MacBook Air available for purchase, Apple is continuing to offer the 13-inch MacBook Air models that were last updated in 2015. The 11-inch MacBook Air has been officially discontinued and can no longer be purchased from Apple.

Pricing on the MacBook Air continues to start at $999 for the 1.6GHz/8GB/128GB model, which is likely why Apple has kept it in the lineup for now. At $999, the MacBook Air is $500 cheaper than the new entry-level MacBook Pro and $300 cheaper than the entry-level Retina MacBook.

At today's event, Apple positioned the new entry-level MacBook Pro as a viable MacBook Air replacement, because the MacBook Pro is now nearly as thin and light as the MacBook Air.

Apple's entry-level MacBook Pro features a 2.0GHz processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, Intel Iris Graphics 540, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. It does not include a Touch Bar or Touch ID support, which allows Apple to sell it for $1,499 instead of $1,799, the price of the entry-level MacBook Pro that has those two features.

I still prefer the Air design over the new MacBook.

1. Ports - real people use things like thumb drives and USB printers and we plug phones into our Macs to charge them. MacBook owners must live entirely wirelessly.

2. Display - You have to disable Retina and use a non-native screen resolution to get the MB to display as much as an Air
11" Air: 1366 x 768
12" MB: 1152 x 720 (Retina doubled to 2304 x 1440)

3. Price - $899 is a lot less than $1299 (a difference magnified in other countries)
Yes there were some serious problems with the base model 11" Air like only 4GB of RAM, but it allowed many people to go Mac instead of that other OS.

Of course I much prefer the 13" MBA over either of the above. It has even more ports like SDXC, a 1440x900 screen (same amount of information as the 15" MBP displays) and the longest battery life of any Mac, something Apple could have done with the new MBP if they weren't so determined to make it thinner.

MacBook's are def pricey but im still using the old non retina 13" pro and was planning to buy a new laptop this year I also notice you can often buy MacBooks on sale in stores like Best Buy so while apple is selling the old air for $999 I bet you will be able to find them cheaper elsewhere

Can get deals at Best Buy open box, Apple refurbished, Expercom.com. Granted the MBA is not retina, but it's been selling out in the refurbished section for the last couple of weeks. Non Retina works for allot of people

2300+ for a 15" MBP I sure as heck can't justify that type of money

Some did, and enjoyed/are still enjoying their portability at a reasonable price with a great battery life, Magsafe, two USB ports (fewer dongles), etc.
Might be good riddance for you, but not for everybody. In my work, I see about as many 11" MBAs as 13" MBAs.
Well I have seen it. But really? An 11"? How do you even get used to that?

I like the new MacBook Pro, with the regular function keys. But, the $1499 price is a bit steep. When the MBA 13in was first released in 2010, it was priced at $1299. With time, Apple made routine updates to the processor and SSD and brought the entry level price down to $999. So, perhaps a similar thing will happen to this edition of the MBP.

Interestingly, if you upgrade a 13 in MBA to 256GB storage and a comparable processor, it costs about $1350.....so, not that much different with similar internals, and you get retina display with the new MBP.

I don't need to update right away, so Ill just wait and see if the price comes down in a year or two. Also, BB will probably have great sales on these laptops next Christmas.

Edit: I guess it should also be noted that if you buy the old MBPr for $1299 and upgrade to 256GB storage to be equivalent to the new MBP, the price is $1499...so, the $1499 price point for the new MBP is not that far out of line...I suppose.
