I wonder who buys a laptop in 2022 with just 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage - then again, people like my parents understand nothing to these things, have no concept of upgradable/non-upgradable, so perhaps it's just 'pick the first/cheapest model'.

The iMacs shipping in 3-4 weeks (with a timeframe that is this loosely defined) may be an indication an update is coming tho.

If you make a good product, people will buy it

My state, Massachusetts, has our sales tax holiday tomorrow and Sunday so I’m placing my order for this MBA in blue, fully maxed out, except for the SSD - got 1TB which is only $200 more than the 512GB which I was going to buy after reading this article:

Ha. Fully maxed out price is $2499. MA Tax Holiday limit: $2500. Perfect.

Edit: I see you are skimping on the SSD so only $2099. Exactly what I bought on release.

For many it's all they need. My friend only uses his for office stuff and occasionally editing videos. It doesn't make sense for him to shell out more for a machine that he's going to upgrade in a few years anyway.

If you’re a comment-section-genius and all of your knowledge about this mac comes from sites like this, you may think the M2 air is a horribly flawed product because the SSD.

However, in the real world, this is just the coolest laptop apple has ever delivered and it’s faster than what 99% of people who buy it could ever need.
The coolest laptop Apple has ever delivered is the 14" IMO. Screen is incredible.

Would be nice if it supported dual monitors. 🤦🏼‍♂️
This is just the iBook / PowerBook split all over again. In the bad old days, iBooks could only do screen mirroring (without using a firmware hack) while the PowerBooks could do screen spanning.

Today it’s 1 external monitor vs 2+ external monitors.

I am surprised they have as much stock as they do. I thought there would be a huge demand for this product and with the supply chain constraints they'd be difficult to get hold of for months. I think of the 512gb/16gb version as the best computer ever made. I guess everybody doesn't see it like that.

That’s because thankfully people started realizing most of the tech YouTubers have no clue what they’re talking about and found out through people who owned and used it that this is actually an incredible machine.
edit: for wrong reply, meant to place meme on another. :)

Me? I bought the base model Air M1 because I needed a laptop in a hurry. Had I had the time to wait I'd have upgraded to 16 GB but the truth is 8 GB is doing me just fine (where my use case is a few Docker containers, Emacs, and a lot of code compilation). I own and have access to more robust hardware and thought I'd end up using the laptop as a terminal but it's proven sufficient for my needs which are professional but just not that taxing. Not everybody's editing movies (or whatever) and the slowest part of my workflow remains the typing-in-the-code part.

Not surprised. This is a perfect machine for most people (and damn is it beautiful).

Absolutely loving my midnight base config model. I upgraded from a 2013 MBP, so this is a HUGE upgrade for me. I thought I would buy another pro, but it really isn't necessary for my needs. The M2 is so fast and I'm loving the massive increase in battery life over what I had before!

I did.... 8GB really is plenty for most people for most tasks. As for storage, I have everything on iCloud and let the computer manage local storage. I've got fiber internet with 1GBit up/down speeds, so accessing files quickly isn't a problem at all. Works fine for me.

Apple is one of the largest companies on earth, so one of course expects a lot of their manufacturing capability, but it's kind of amusing to see a headline acting as if it's abnormal to have still not caught up to demand a month after launch of a hot new product.

Earlier this year my org waited well over two months between order and delivery of some completely boring midrange Dell laptops getting toward the end of a product cycle. I don't even have a clue when the recent-release model we ordered last month will ship, but at this point I'm downright excited when I see a lead time of only 3 weeks on just about anything from Dell.

Well said and a voice of reason here.

The number of unknown variables impacting the end result of "availability" or "shipping times" makes it impossible to determine much useful data about the popularity or success of products.

I distinctly remember a few people here predicting the Air wouldn’t be a hot seller, against all logic and reason….

Ordered on day 1 at time of release. Finally got mine a couple days ago.
Midnight, 16GB, 1TB. Love it! I made my 2012 iMac last 10 years so happy to see the huge differences. I’m having to go back and re-review MacOS new features 😂

Sure, I guess I'm biased because I know what to look out for when I buy devices - 256 GB storage is also a big flag for my needs, but if you're using online tools and browse sites, it's fine as well.
