There is absolutely no legitimate reason why the second gen iPad pros can’t run iPadOS 18. Less powerful devices can. Sad.
I'd almost agree, but the iPad Pro models of that generation are only limited to 4 GB of RAM and has the A10X Fusion SoC, which may limit the ability of iPadOS 18.x to run properly even with no Apple Intelligence functionality.

Glad to know Apple is (finally) dealing with the horrible update. I'd say the vast majority of the apps I regularly use, require re-login frequently, every day.

Fwiw the iPad 7 has an A10 Fusion processor and 3GB of RAM, and it supports iPadOS 18.

I have a 2nd Gen 12.9" iPad Pro with A10X 2.3 GHz. It has 4GB of RAM and Power VR Graphics Series GPU with 12 cores. My Mum has the same specced 10.5". Both released 2017.

The iPad 7 has an A10 Fusion also 2.3 GHz with just 3GB and the GPU has only 6 cores and is also a PowerVR Series but with the extension 7XT Plus.

I am sure the Pros are faster but only the iPad 7 is getting iOS 18. Only reason, it had been released two years later.

It seems they just dropped everything older than 2019 and only kept the iPhone XS and XR from 2018 to drop 17 for iPhones completely.
It doesn't make much sense to keep three iPads on 17, they could have dropped that version completely there too. Without Apple Intelligence it feels even faster.

The only reason for keeping the two Pros on 17 is because the iPad 6 from one year later only has 2GB of RAM, but the same CPU, GPU and cameras as the iPad 7 that only got 1GB of RAM more and eSIM support.

For me this is just planned obsolescence for. I won't buy a new Pro anyway.

I got a used 2019 Air and 2021 iPad 9 in perfect condition for very cheap instead.

The pre-owned iPad 6 that I purchased back in 2022 was running iPadOS 13.7 which is still fast in terms of performance or response time.

It showed a bit of slow performance on iPadOS 15, and became more noticeable on iPadOS 16. I decided to just leave it at iPadOS 16.7 even though it can still upgrade to iPadOS 17.

If not for the new features of the Photos app only available on iPadOS 15 and iPadOS 16, I would have kept it on iPadOS 13.

Apple should base the supported OS version on the SoC and not the release date of the device. iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 can only update/upgrade to iOS 15 when they use different SoC, A9 and A10.

The oldest iPad models still supported have A10 while the iPhone counterpart no longer receives a new major version.

Apple is also inconsistent with vintage and obsolete devices since the devices are released on different dates in different countries. You may still be able to have your devices serviced for repair in one country but not in a different one.

Not to worry, everyone, because Apple was aware of the issue before it affected any customer, because Apple talks to millions of customers a minute. Apple found iPadOS 17.7.7 just wasn’t quite ready to delight customers, so they had to pull it at the last minute. That’s what happens when a small startup like Apple is pushing the bleeding edge of technology. Stay tuned for the upcoming iPadOS 17.7.7, the BEST, MOST POWERFUL version of iPadOS 17 that Apple has ever released for iPadOS 17, with the best in class privacy that Apple is known for the world over! Apple can’t wait to see the incredible things customers are able to do. Apple thinks you’re gonna love it.

Yep, I have had the issues described on my iPad Pro 10.5 since the update to 17.7.7. I saw I was not alone in threads like this one. I contacted Apple Support yesterday and they told me Apple is aware of the issue and working on a solution.
i have spoken to them 3 times now same reply "we know will fix it eventually but know idea when I asked if their was any way to go back and as told no only the Beta testers can do that. Why didn't the Beta testers find it ??

17.7.8 came out yesterday, so presumably this is fixed now. I updated, but haven't tried all the affected apps yet.

Installed it today. PayPal won’t log in ,all apps in alphabetical order folders deleted I put my apps back in to folders where I wanted them and switched off. Turned back on tonight no folders and apps back to alphabetical order.
I’m sure this is just a ploy to get us to buy the latest IPads
