The Meta AI glasses are not mainstream. Apple is looking for it and Google to make it mainstream. You can see the lack of hype at launch for the glasses outside of tech journalists and tech bros. Most mainstream consumers are waiting for a non-meta version as the non Gen X crowd dislikes meta as a company
They dislike it so much that Meta products (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) are by far the most popular platforms. Interesting. Based on such logic only Apple might be disliked more than Meta.

If this is true, what was the point of the Vision Pro? Why release a headset priced beyond the means of most potential buyers if you're not committed it its future? And what does it say about Apple that it's now basically just chasing after any idea its rivals come up with, like folding phones and glasses that can record things?

Finally a move from Apple that makes sense.

Vision Pro has been a train wreck from the start. There's no killer app, it's expensive, and most importantly, it failed the social acceptance test. Nobody wants to walk around wearing scuba goggles. A lighter version of Vision Pro still has the same problems - hip battery back, loner experience, lack of social acceptance. Nobody wants to pay $1,999 for that.

Glasses are at least socially acceptable.

THIS IS THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!
Apple, if you want ideas:
- put the Apple watch chip into the glass, computation power is not important at all in wearables. Battery life and weight is.
- run watch os, rather than iOS/iPadOS on the glass. Rely on iPhone for computation. This is your competitive advantage Meta doesn’t have.
- focus on notification, and voice + visual AI, those are better on glasses vs phones. The computation is on cloud so you don’t need a powerful chip either.
- incorporate Electromyography into Apple Watch, so we don’t have to wear an extra band. You got haptic feedback built in to the watch as well.
- give us swappable batteries and a charging pouch. I shouldn’t need to take the glass off to charge it.

This essentially ties the phone-watch-glasses into one coherent ecosystem

Whether through the AVP or chunky, dark-rimmed “smart” glasses, very few people want to look like anti-social dorks or Mark Sugarloaf’s lemmings.
Yet thanks to Tim Spindler’s visionless leadership, Apple squandered millions in developing something that will only be regarded, some 20 years from now, as a Pippin-like rarity owned by few and used by no one.

I NEED prescriptions glasses and HATE to use them. I use contact lenses. So this is garbage.

Nothing will convince me to use something in my head, attached to my body when I can use my phone instead.

Apple Watch has a meaning, u can't record ur heartbeat without it. But this, is just nonsense.

Facebook is only alive due to Facebook Marketplace.
Instagram is slowly cratering and is getting its lunch eaten by TikTok
Whatsapp is only alive due to the difficult nature of moving contacts and groups to another platform.

As soon as a competitor comes up , the lack of loyalty towards meta will destroy its product

There is no point, they have no idea what to do with it.

Great to see that they won’t be “demoing” another crafty product again. We still don’t have the Apple Intelligence promised to us.

This is venturing off-topic, but have you actually been to any of those platforms? For one, they're still the most popular because of lack of real true alternatives. But secondly, and more importantly, maybe go check on the predominant demographics, especially for Facebook and Instagram. It's mostly boomers (particularly Facebook), Gen-X, and to some smaller extent older Millennials.

WhatsApp is only popular outside the US because it's the main messaging service in many countries. iMessage (Apple) is not widely used in many countries outside the US, as Apple, in general, is not nearly as popular as inside the US. So, WhatsApp is not exactly popular because people love it. But because people don't particularly have alternatives. And that's not even touching on the fact that WhatsApp was widely used well before Meta has acquired it, so that doesn't exactly have much of anything to do with Meta itself.

people in the 20th century never imagined computers mainstream. they couldn't think computer would get smaller enough in your pocket and other uses.

I guess its the same for theses devices. while right now they are too big and uncomfortable, I do see a future when they get small enough. but not by being a glass or a helmet pro.

Tim Cook turns 65 this year. He needed a halo product to mark his legacy. Apple was betting on high risk, high reward. They loaded Vision Pro with tech with the hopes competitors wouldn't be able to match it. While that was true, Apple failed to realize people don't want to be loners wearing a headset with no killer app.

I think people are missing out on the fact that Apple isn’t going to make a Vision Pro type of product into smart glasses. They’re gonna simply make some dumb glasses with Siri functionality that don’t do much of anything that cost an arm and a leg. This isn’t an innovation. This is just slapping things together that you think the market wants so you can make money off it.

I really hope they don’t abandon the Vision Pro. They could really knock it out of the park with this product if they just cut the weight in half, made it better and faster and more uses and cheaper.
