I've been checking appointments for the Apple Upgrade Program and finally got myself an appointment for a 128gb 6s + this afternoon.

Assuming I'm approved in store, will I be able to have the phone activated in the Apple store or do I need to take it to an AT&T store? I already have a mobile share value plan so it should be pretty simple to switch out my active devices.

You don't need to go to the AT&T store. Apple will handle it.

You should be able to walk out of the Apple Store with your 6s+ activated. Unless they have a problem activating the phone, that's the only reason I would see for them to send to you to the AT&T Store.

Don't even need to unseal the box or switch sim cards. IMEI's are now automatically sent to the need to even contact AT&T. You'll see your old phone flip to "No Service" and the new one will be active. Took the AT&T website a day to catch up, but it now knows I have a 6s Plus and I never contacted them at all. It was pretty cool to take a sealed box home with an activated phone inside.
