Do they do this often? I have never seen this before without some product added/changed.

Not often, but it happens.
I can't imagine they would just announce an update on Apple.com without some type of presentation or keynote for it.
It's so...un-Apple like. And Steve or no Steve, I just can't see them all of a sudden sticking an updated MBP or MB on the site with no fanfare.

Why not? If there's no design change, and it's just spec bumping units and tweaking some features, they've done that tons of times for various products

They didn't have a presentation for the 15" and 17" Macbook Pro's when the started using the i5 and i7 chips ;-) This would be perfect cause I need a new laptop now! HAHA

I stand corrected. Hopefully this is the case here, but i don't want to get my hopes up. In these cases, was it just the store that went down? Or the actual Mac section as well?
