'Apple Store' iOS App Update Coming Tuesday with Free iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore Deals

So, just so I'm clear on this story.

Apple is holding Verizon hostage for X million unsold iPhone's because of a contract that they couldn't meet and now Apple wants to pull even more customers away from Vendors and get more sales in their own stores.

The entire article just seems so desperate on Apple's part, what am I missing?

I agree with you. I think this whole idea of pushing more people to buy iPhones looks like an act of desperation on Apple's part.

The breakdown of Apple's revenue that I saw (here on Macrumors) showed that Apple was making well over 50% of its revenue from the iPhone.

I think Tim Cook realizes what I've said previously, at some point everyone who wants an iPhone will have one. Where does Apple go from there?

My own opinion, Apple should either buy T-Mobile or Sprint and start its own cellular carrier network, or leave the iPhone sales to the carriers and focus on selling iPads.

Is there any reason that Apple can't just preinstall this app on all iOS devices? Is there some sort of antitrust concern? It can't be about bloat, can it?

I have four Apple stores within 30 minutes of me. I refuse to go to any of them. last time I was at one, I had ordered an iPhone online and went to the store to pick it up. Took 30 minutes to see anyone to get my phone with the stupid check in system they had.

Maybe their intentions were that it would make me want to look at computers or iPads to buy one but I just stood there waiting.

Wow...u gave up on all apple stores because u had to wait 30 mins.? To each his own, but that wouldn't bother me at all. Their stores get busy. Sometimes u have to wait. No different then a busy restaurant.

Apple needs to massively expand their store count if they want to be selling directly to customers more. Their nearest store to me is 50 miles away. I have an AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart all within 5 miles. In fact, with the exception of Target, I have 2 of each within 5 miles of me. If I expand to being 15 miles away, I have 2 Targets (and like 5 Walmarts...)

Just because an area has a bunch of WalMarts doesn't mean it can support a single Apple store. They have vastly different clienteles. Apple goes where the bulk of their customers are.

I want to hear more about the expanded trade in program. I remember a few years ago you could get a free iPod for letting apple recycle your old computer. Craigslist has been working so well for me my last couple upgrades.

Doesn't seem like a very mutual contract anymore for Apple vendors anymore.

Wonder what Tim is going to pull out of his As* next?

Ads on the home screen but only if Apple get's a 30% cut.

The free balloon if I get an iToy from the Apple store and not Verizon?
There is no incentive to buy from Apple and Apple knows it.

VZW and AT&T do not get incentives for iPhone sales. Apple Store specialists can activate devices with upgrades, new contracts and additional lines of service.

If anything, the carriers should welcome this and encourage their customers to visit an Apple Store for an iPhone as it frees up resources at their own stores and as a result overhead costs.

I guess you missed the part where Apple is holding Verizon for 14 Billion worth of unsold iPhones. Now Tim Cook wants to pull mores sales internally to Apple stores.

Apple is going to have a heck of a time getting any carrier to sign a contract for any amount of phones if Apple is backstabbing them with these tactics.

I would have to drive over 2 hours (each way) to get to an Apple store. I had to do it to have an iPhone 3GS earpiece replaced. The time and gas cost me more than the part did.

I and many millions of customers have no reason to visit an Apple store for any reason other than a repair.

Give me one reason I would drive 2 hours (each way) to buy an iPhone?

Please don't give the Apple experience story. My one episode of being herded like cattle and waiting 45 minutes for soon pimply faced "genius" and then another 30 minutes for him to fix it was not a good experience.

This. This is why nobody wants to work retail.

Hey, that 'pimply faced genius' is a person too, jerk. Just doing his job. Did your phone get fixed? Exactly. You likely treated several people like garbage who are there solely to help with your issue.

That genius might have been 'pimply faced', but I bet he's a million times more patient than you from putting up with ungrateful jerks all day

News flash, you got your phone repaired SAME DAY. Nobody forced you to drive 2 hours. You had the option to pay a simple 30 dollars for express service through the mail.

Get some perspective. The world is not your punching bag or therapist for you to gripe to

Pre-installed apps can't get updates until the next iOS version.

Get some perspective yourself and open your eyes to the fact that Apple is abusing their carriers with the tactics they are using to pull more sales away from carriers.

As far as the repair goes that pimpled face "genius" and Apple was 45 minutes late on my appointment. That's why I make appointments.

I blew an entire day off to get a phone repaired. I work for a living and being without a mobile phone for a day is not an option for me. Hence the reason I drove 4 hours to get it fixed.

Anyway you want to defend Apple is your own perspective. I personally had a terrible experience with them and think the tactics that are being implemented with their carriers will ultimately hurt their stock in the long run.

Maybe I should have said hurt their stock more than it already has been.

Don't even remotely try and turn my experience into my fault. That's not your judgement to make.

At least I was treated better than their developers. 3 Days down and no word from Apple.

Inexcusable for a billion dollar company with millions of developers depending on that revenue.

I have all this plus 2 Apple stores within 15 mins... and I still order online.... why? Convenience :) ..... I don't have worry about battling mall traffic, finding a parking spot, etc.... Apple makes so easy to order online and hell, that is why I love Amazon too..... I always find what I want, don't waste gas and don't waste time looking for things they may or may not have in stock (note: not talking about Apple here....I have had good experiences with Apple stores, but to me .. the Apple store is where to take my broken laptop or pick up a new set of earbuds when I lose them for the billionth time)

30 minutes, 4 hours,... That's nothing compared to what Android users have to go through when something goes wrong with their phone. There isn't even a retail store for them so they send it to the carrier and then wait for days.

I wasn't proposing it's feasible for an Apple store to be supported in the area - I'm just saying that they need to have more stores in my area if they want to sell directly to people.

That or they need to find some way of making more people decide to buy online.

Look forward to seeing what free content is offered.

Re: stores. Have always had excellent service when I visit one, love the ability to make appointments (which are kept), and also love the ability to order online for in-store pickup, thus avoiding the nonsense of waiting at home & waiting for FedEx to show up, or not.

Well I mean they can do two things at once right? The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Siri: You can do two things at once? That's cool.

Yeah... the employees at the retail stores and the people making decisions in Cupertino should probably be mentioned in the same breath. Oh wait, I think those are separate issues which is why there is a different thread for the two.

Are you privy to the contract between Apple and the carriers? I'm sure not, but I'd assume that Verizon committed to activating a certain number of iPhones on its network, not to sell them directly in their stores. If so, an iPhone sold at an Apple Store and activated on Verizon will still count towards their commitment. That's really the only way the deal would make any sense.

Yes, what's the point in ordering ahead if I can't just walk in and pay for it and be out in less then ten?

I can do that at BestBuy, why not the Apple store?
