It could be the new iPods, as well. If there is a separate event for a smaller iPad later this month or early next month, that may be a more logical date to release the new iMacs, as well as the 13" Retina MacBook Pro. All they need to do is get it out before Halloween in order to capture holiday sales.
Ohh, latest rumors have it at Friday, read somewhere that Apple support staff is expecting a surge around 6AM.

It really makes you wonder how many people ordered an iPhone 4S in the minutes before the store went down, oblivious to the fact that some hours later they could order the new model for the same price 
Could be, although I would imagine radically new iPods would get their own event, unless they are part of the iPhone announcement tonight.

I believe last year started at 3AM EST. Now that was an odd time yet the servers still crashed haha
Midnight PDT, so perhaps West Coast traffic did it in. That said, by and large both the 4S and new iPad launches went fairly smoothly considering the volumes sold. Hopefully they have the kinks ironed out a bit more.
That said, last year only the on-contract phones were available for pre-order. I'd rather get the no-commitment pricing or factory unlocked version, which didn't go on sale for a month in the US (although the retail stores sold full priced AT&T models that were unlocked).

It's up for me in NC, just put my preorder in for an iPhone 5 128gb white model, expected delivery on sept 21st...... Oh how I wish this were true!

I really do not understand why they would not do that....they have had plenty of time to prepare. Waiting a few days just makes it a cluster **** b.c everybody and their mother knows by then.
