the pre installed option has been available for a while.
i bought an emac about a month ago and had FCE express pre-installed.....for 128CDN! thats like 90 USD

My only question is if I ordered a new system with this software pre-installed would I get some backup disks or something? What would happen if I ever needed to do a clean install? Would my software just go bye-bye?

no discounts

I chose the $20 off Apple Store e-coupon when I renewed my dotMAC account. If you choose to purchase an iTunes gift certificate, you cannot use the e-coupon for the purchase. There is no place to put the code when you go to make the purchase.

Pretty annoying.

do not worry. you do get the backup disks.

i had FCE pre installed and it came with the disks.

You know what would be really cool? If the "10% off on music items" deal on November 28th included the iTunes gift certificates! Yeah, I know. No chance.

This gift certificate idea is a good start. But I think it needs to be more readily available to really meet its full potential. Like another poster said make it available in Wal-Mart, BB, CompUSA, Sam Goody even...etc..

Why is this annoying?

Apple told you that the .mac discount wasn't applicable towards electronic download purchases before you selected it as an option. They made it pretty clear. Obviously when you're downloading music from iTMS it's an electronic download.

Read the terms, it's all there.

Re: Re: no discounts

You are right, I didn't read the fine print. I just remember that it was for any purchase over $20 from the apple store. And to be precise, the gift certificate isn't technically an electronic download purchase.

Differences in Panther installations

Since the Panther installer I purchased was through the "Up-To-Date" program. (I purchased the iMac after Panther was already released, but the unit was just old enough to have only Jaguar installed.)

This limited preinstalled software option is a step in the right direction. Many users are very busy and don't want to spend the extra time to install software that they want to use right away. Often they may have ordered several units so installation time becomes an issue.

Others who are new to computers or just new to Macs sometimes lack confidence in their ability to perform simple tasks such as install software. Sure, eventually they will discover how easy it is to do installations but in the meantime they can just relax and use their preinstalled software. This helps to put their mind at ease when they choose to purchase a Mac. In other words, more sales for Apple.

I would feel much better about giving someone a tangible Gift Certicate than one online. It feels kind of cheap sending one online.

Hopefully Apple will make these widely Available in a variety of stores.
Starbucks, Barnes & Noble??

while i think it would awesome to buy them in stores, i dont think bookstores like b & n would sell them...b & n nix'd their ebook sales out of fear of losing online book sales.
more likely stores without any interested in selling cds and media would do it (stop n shop comes to mind, as a jack of all trades grocery store).

Gift Certificate - Works in Europe?

The question that I have is simple, if someone in the USA give a gift certificate to someone who lives OUTSIDE the USA (for example, Portugal or the UK) can that person redeem the certificate? Can they begin to enter the iTMS experience?

I read about this somewhere, and I think it is happening...Imagine eBay auctions for iTunes Gift Certificates, with the Seller selling it for a slight profit. I think they would sell.

Cool. I snail-mail ordered a $20 G/C for my sis for Christmas. I'm trying to introduce my whole Windows-family to iTunes. I put it on all their computers but I don't think they've tried it yet. With a G/C they'll have to

Re: Installed apps: so what?

Does this mean that the image of the installers for the extra BTO software (Keynote, Final Cut Express, whatever) will be incorporated onto the prime software restore disc for the machine itself, or will the software simply accompany the machine, boxed as it would be otherwise? Either way doesn't sound like a good idea anyway.

For me this is the main question. If the Apps are pre-installed - do they ship a CD as well ? E.g. if you want to use the Apps on a different Mac. Maybe one you order 2-3 years later ? Or is it necessary to purchase the apps for every Mac you want to use em on ?

And I do not talk about having them on more then one Mac at the same time but use them on other machines !

Any thoughts ?

Well, with Jaguar there were separate install and upgrade CD sets. When I bought my 17" iMac, it shipped with 10.1, but with upgrade CDs for 10.2 - i.e. they would only install over an older version of OSX, and couldn't be used for upgrading from 9 or for a clean install. I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar upgrade CDs for Panther.

SEEN IT...

the apple store has had the option to preinstall this software for some time now. I saw it at least a month ago.

there may be one or two new pieces of software available, but this is old news guys

the installer for 10.3 up-to-date had a previous install check built into it, the retail version did not. It was only on disk 1. I tested this by installing 10.3 on a completely clean machine with a 10.3 retail disk 1 and up-to-date disk 2 & 3.
