Apple Store pickup - how does activsation work?

I have never bought an iPhone from Apple, always AT&T direct with FAN discount for monthly price (not phone)

If I buy a new 8 or X on Apples site and get in store pickup for tomorrow, how do they activate ?

Do they just set an appt and I assume their systems work with AT&T to activate ?

Any advice on how it works would be appreciated...
