Hi all,

I am going to buy an iPhone Xs however it seems stores are sold out for pick up (in NY area). Do you think they will have stock on hand at the stores on Friday ? I would also like to see the Silver and Grey colours before buying.

I suspect that they will have XS but maybe not Max models in stock throughout the day on Friday. No one can really answer you for sure though.

Just because it shows unavailable for pick up does not mean they are out of stock, they typically set aside a some inventories for walk-ins availability.
 
I use to work for Apple. They usually set aside many phones to sell for walk-in customers, but since the Max is the phone to get until the XR comes out, you should get there really early. The stores I would go to would be Grand Central, UES/UWS stores as the foot traffic of these stores are very low first thing in the morning. So your chances of getting the phone you want are a lot higher.
 
Getting in line, you probably would get one. But since you want to check stuff out before you buy, just getting there at opening makes more sense.

I may get there around opening this time. I have a date slipped order, and this may be a better option, as i'm going out of town.

I think my online order actually says something like: "Your order may take an unusually long time".
I guess they want to make that clear :D

At the release check online every night at 10. The inventory is updated at that time, so you can place an order for pick up the next day. That is how I always got my phone. This is my first pre-order. I am usually able to get the phone 3-4 days after launch.

Don’t they get stock in Friday evening of launch day as well (for walk ins and order online/pickup for Saturday)? For the X I got in line at a CA store around 8 AM Saturday and was able to snag one.

You’ll have to go sit there and see for yourself.

If you're going for the Xs (not the Max) I think you won't have any trouble at all. I hit my Apple Store around lunch time last year and there was not even any line to see the guy about availability. All the talk on the web is that the Max is going a lot faster than most models of the Xs so I think you'll be able to walk right up and get one.

I had the same experience last year. I did an in-store pickup for my X and it was the first time I'd ever been to an Apple Store on launch day and there wasn't a line for the new phone. One of the dudes who was there to pickup his pre-order at the same time as me even swapped his Silver order with a Space Gray model that they had in stock. There were no issues buying that day, and I suspect for the XS models it will largely be the same. Max, on the other hand, will probably be more scarce.
 
historically, Apple stores have gotten some level of stock for in-store pickups of new release models. Even in cases where shipping times were 5-6 weeks out for plus phones, Apple stores near me (Cleveland, OH) had some stock on launch day. I suspect they'll have a decent number of XS and some XS Max as well (albeit probably fewer of these).
 
Pick a decent sized Apple store near you and if you can be 1st to 3rd person in line on 9/21 morning, they should have XS Max available.

Yes they intentionally disable it today and will be re enabled likely Friday.
