Apple Store warranty for an iPhone 5 bought on AT&T

A friend of a friend is selling his AT&T iPhone 5 and I want to buy it, but I have a question regarding warranty: Can I use the warranty in an Apple Store even without the buying receipt (they have the serial number, and I remind you that the phone was bought on AT&T)? For example, if I would want to exchange the phone because the phone has scuffs or other defects.
