Thefts like this is why I can understand why Apple went the serialization route for some of their parts because theft of iphones for the majority is for their parts. I remember reading an article where London, UK has had a particualr problem of London citizens and vistors having their iphone stolen by criminal gangs, mostly pickpockets. These iphones then get broken down and their parts used to repair other iphones (owned by the criminals or to be sold on). Serialization prevented this but it also had a negative impact on 3rd party iphone repair shops who would try to use replacement parts to fix a customers iphone on for it to fail due to serialization issues.
