What’s the appeal to in store pickup?

I can’t speak for any other part of the US but I live 10 miles north of the largest city in my state, and I didn’t get the phone delivered until 8:00 pm, because I am “rural”. When ordering the phone I didn’t have the option to specify in store pick up. If I can believe UPS tracking the truck was loaded and left for deliveries at 9:00 am.

Even with a couple of hours delay those people probably got their phones many hours earlier then I did, and my delivery wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Anything delivered by UPS will arrive no sooner than 5 PM on low volume days and if it’s an Apple delivery or Christmas rush then it sometimes gets delayed until the next day. That’s why people use in store pick up, at least when it’s available.

I walked right in to Best Buy at 5pm without a Pre-order and picked up my XS Max and was out the door in less than 20 minutes from the time I walked in. 10 of that was picking out a case I liked.

Standing here in Houston waiting for Apple to get their **** together. I can’t believe that they could drop the ball this badly. Heads need to roll for this.

Lol calm down. It’s a glitch in the system. If your company’s system goes down for an hour, should your head roll for this? Ups completely blew my order and sent it back to TMobile. No ones head should roll for that. Stop complaining.

Same here. Got the 256 gold. Kind of like it.

Delivery finally scheduled for Monday.

Can't complain, they first said it would be a week later.

That angle looked familiar, I picked my iPhone XS Max (512gb and gold) up from the Manhattan Village Location. I was the first one in line and I was there at 7am, 1 hour before they opened. Take into consideration that was the reserve (pre-order) line. But the walk-in line was a hot mess.

I have a "Global Issue". It's the price of the new phone. When did IOS become worth marking up the hardware an extra $250 over last year? They literally released the phones that should have been their normal release and were like "surprise look how courageous we are, we marked them up $250". Wow.... I can't be the only one who saw that. That was some real slick marketing maneuvering there. You gotta hand it to them on that. Why people just lapped it up? Well that's another story.

Walked into a very empty O2 shop in Bolton England and walked out 5 mins later with my pre ordered max on launch day. Can’t believe the issues you guys are having in US, home of apple

Update: Apple's systems appear to be coming back online and reservation pickups are now being processed. There is, however, still a backlog of customers to work through.

All a bit embarrising for a company whose bold claim is 'everything just works'.

Did my preorder for my watch super late be it was hard to find a place where it was available and I could put it on At&t installments. Oddly enough I was able to place orders for pickup at a bestbuy 90 miles away, even though all the best buys near me didn’t have any stock of watches. Turns out when I got there they said there was a shipping error and they received all 400 or so watches allocated for their district which messed with a lot of people’s orders. Unfortunately it was a pain to put my watch on installments though, as the online pick up activation failed, and I had to cancel it, buy it outright and then return it next day and put it on installments. Not the smoothest process but was able to get it done. Picking up my XS was easy as well

You drove 180 miles round trip for a watch?

I -Ted for home delivery and received it at 4pm local time by UPS. My second iPhone Xs with an original launch day delivery apparently did not make the flight on time and is being delivered on Monday. No biggy, I am glad I returned the last years X and got the Xs instead, FaceID is much improved regarding unlock speed and the extra gig of RAM is great too, on par with my iPad Pro.

Never understood the reservation to pick-up in store, unless you are planning on working late and want to drop-by at the Store on your way back, at which point you could just pick it up at the UPS depot. Usually launch day is like a zoo at the Apple Store, the employees are stressed and getting questions from several customers from all sides can make for an uncomfortable experience with longer purchase lines than usual. Avoid at all costs.

All was working Saturday afternoon... ordered an iphone xs max 256gb silver online at 3:17pm and was able to select a Saturday 4:30-5pm pickup window. Stoneridge Mall Pleasanton.

Got to store at 4:25pm and was asked to wait until 430pm so the 4-4:30pm pickup window to close, then they let me queue at 4:30pm. 3 people in front of me from earlier pickup slot.

I was doing an upgrade via the upgrade program.

19min later I was leaving the store with my new phone. Took longer for the stock runner to bring it and the Apple tech to find a working printer to print the receipt than to reset my old phone and walk out.

Amazing experience cs. waiting for ups to deliver!

This glitch hit UK stores about 8:30pm, 30 minutes before they closed for the day. I imagine there were some difficult conversations to be had there.

It was only down for about 2 hours at best and people still got their phones at the end of the day. RELAX.

Not for everyone. I had an appointment to pick up a watch and phone on Friday evening. I was able to get the watch, but no phone. They had me call Apple while still in the store, and after more than 30 minutes on hold, I was told that the phone was in the store, but not processed yet. So I waited. And waited. And watched others come in and pick up phones they had pre-ordered. I asked if I could just cancel my order and buy one of the phones in stock, and was told no. Finally I gave up, and called again the next day, because the app still said "Order in Progress" This time, a woman told me that the shipment was delayed in China because of the typhoon, and would be here Monday. Well, it's Monday, and no change. Still "Order in Progress". I'm going on a trip on Thursday and was hoping to get the phone before I leave. If it shows up after that, they'll only hold it for 7 days and I won't return before that.

I'm in a similar situation with home delivery, but it is expected to be delivered today. I leave for Japan on Saturday, at this rate I could have just had them send it there by boat for me to pick up.

And of course this added to the stupidity of the apple store overall system means people that want to buy other apple products (until they go extinct!) are told to wait in another line until some of the so-called apple experts have time for you. The other day I was waiting to buy a touch pad in line for about 30 minutes and no-one attended the line. I complained to the store manager and he told me that APPLE had told him to only focus on the iPhone buyers, so we would have to wait until they finished with them first! Apple has become a phone company. #whereistheregisterapplestore

Yay! got my Series 4 yesterday at 3:37pm!

Having ordered at 3:06am (2 minutes after order system opened), Apple first said (order completed page) it would be delivered on 9/21, then a few seconds later (email & page refresh) already slipped to 9/28-10/2, then shipped for delivery on 9/21 (same-day from China! wow!), then stalled in customs, then said delivery by 3:00pm 9/24, then arrived 3:37pm 9/24.

For all the consternation, Apple under-promised and over-delivered again (arrived a week early).

On release date, I only waited 30 Min. Had reservation 4:30-5pm and it was in my hands at 5pm for set up.

We're hearing from a number of readers over the past hour or so that Apple's retail stores are having problems completing in-store reservation pickups for the new iPhone and Apple Watch models. Multiple customers have been told there is a "global" issue affecting Apple's systems and we're hearing there are some long lines building up as customers wait for the issues to be resolved.

Pickup line at Manhattan Village store in Manhattan Beach, California

Some customers have reportedly been told to cancel their existing reservations and make walk-in purchases from available stock, while others are simply being told to wait things out while staff members discuss how to handle the situation.

We'll update this post if we hear more about the situation, but if you have an upcoming pickup window, you might want to be prepared for some delays.
