Apple today indicated that its retail store at the Nave de Vero shopping mall in the Venice area will reopen on Tuesday, May 19, with reduced operating hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time and other health and safety measures in place.

Italian website iSpazio today reported that Apple plans to reopen 10 of its 17 stores in Italy on May 19, excluding locations in the Piedmont and Lombardy regions.

After closing all of its retail stores outside of the Greater China region in mid-March due to the global health crisis, Apple is in the process of reopening locations in some countries, including Australia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, and the United States. However, the majority of its stores around the world remain closed.

MacRumors shared a list of guidelines that Apple Stores are following upon reopening, such as social distancing and checking the temperatures of customers.

find it very strange, Italy is far from free of the virus. Unlike the Netherlands, where there are almost no more infections, the Apple Stores remain closed

It would seem that blue collar workers around the globe are being used as Guinea pigs in kick starting the economy.

Unfortunately this is only going to contribute to a second spike in COVID-19 a surge in mortality and ultimately a return to lockdown resulting in a deeper recession, increased unemployment and poverty for millions.

Staring next week many retails store are allowed to open.
One of the biggest electronics shop in Italy has been opened for weeks, so many of the Apple premium resellers. They could, as they were considered strategic since people are working from home and need to buy/repair PCs and smartphones.
However, some regions in Italy could impose more restrictions, the iconic store in downtown Milan will likely stay closed for a while.
Most of the infection and casualties are concentrated in 3 regions in Italy, in particular the northern area. Elsewhere the situation is way better.
Restrictions are still in place to travel between regions in order to avoid spreading the virus, but inside each region people are allowed to travel to go to work and visit relatives and as I said retail stores are going to open next Monday

Second wave to strike in 3..2..1..
This "second wave" is going to happen no matter when things reopen. But take from this what you will. I'm a healthcare worker in Cook County, Illinois. The significance of Cook County? It is currently believed that Cook County will overtake Queens as the "hardest hit" in the US.

And yet for some reason, despite that bit of info and the fact that our governor keeps warning us that we will be hit hard again in the winter or that there will be a huge surge in cases if we reopen things...we have dismantled most of, if not all, of our temporary COVID setups. McCormick Place in Chicago had 3000 beds. They reduced it to 1000. And then closed it completely and have dismantled it. If they truly are worried about this "second wave" or a surge in cases...dismantling these places seems highly suspect. Some things just don't add up when you look at all the little details together.

Italy - or the US, the EU, etc - will never be free of the virus. They - like any other country - have to decide what's the best thing to do: a totally crashed economy, with raging debt, unemployment, etc, or deaths from Covid-19. Italy had a good month or two to scale up its healthcare system for the inevitable spike. Considering how they're begging the EU for free shared debit, the situation is quite dire. The Italian government is also on the brink of collapsing, which would make things even worse.

They are not used as Guinea pigs, they are the ones suffering the most from this lockdown.
No one does not expect a "surge in mortality", or even in cases. We all know that it's going to happen, and it was never claimed by anyone that we would prevent that, lockdown or not.
What we tried to do for months, was to avoid the overwhelming of the healthcare system (the so called "flattening of the curve"). Now, we had months to study this virus, we had months to prepare, and we had months to understand the best behavior. In the US there is a big overstock of ventilators and respirators. The EU also is now in decent shape. Is everything perfect and under control? No, but now we can handle this horrible virus in a way that does not also destroys everything else.

One of the reasons of closing down lots of businesses in the beginning of the pandemic (not just apple) is because nobody knew how fast or furious the virus would spread. The country wide lockdowns were initiated as a drastic control method to control the explosion of the virus.

Now that time has passed and we can see numbers on how it is spreading, (it's not out control) it only makes sense to open up a little more and try to get back to life. We can't all stay cowering in our homes forever. That'll wipe out mankind faster than the virus.

Do you live in Italy? Where your words coming from? Honestly i live in Italy and the situation is way better than many other countries in the world now. 19 May almost anything will open, with masks, distance etc etc but will open. The lock down worked and in many areas of Italy the virus is almost at 0 cases. Italy is divided in 20 regions and only in 2 (Lombardia and Piemonte) the virus is still "high" but the virus curve tendency is anyway going down. I live in a region of 3 millions persons and yesterday was only 19 persons in intense therapy and 400 in hospitals...and in all Italy (60 millions) yesterday was only 888 new cases. The new medical therapies discovered and tested in Italy (Plasma and more) are giving excellent results and in general the infected are not going to the intense therapies anymore. Many infected are going out from the infection in a short time compared to before and many incredibly are out of the virus in 48h...Hospitals are emptying in all Italy and covid departments closing... Till the vaccine no one in the world is safe but with precautions normal life can start again... So please before give fake information...ask. Cheers ;)

So what should we do, all cower under our beds until there is no more COVID-19 disease?
If so, then the world's economies will be completely and forever destroyed. It's time to move on with our lives. Will more people die? Probably. But that is the price we have to pay instead of thorough and complete devastation.

Similar in NYC. The US Navy hospital ship was sent away as it was no longer needed, the Jakob Javits center was decomissioned as a COVID-19 treatment facility. the medical facility set up in Central Park was dismantled and several NYC-area hospitals are now reporting an excess of beds.

The reopening of Apple stores has to be tactfully executed, in the sense that it’s more like ‘turning a dial’ versus ‘flipping a switch’. You have to take the necessary precautions based on how your local region is handling/being affected by C/19.

I think Apple has been extremely cautious in terms of opening their stores (Which I support) when necessary, in my opinion, it’s better to be overly cautious then Having the mindset of “Hurry, let’s open our stores to the public ASAP.”

One thing that holds true, not every state/country has been affected the same, it’s obviously worse in some areas and others have vastly improved, and I think Apple needs to base Reopening Apple stores based off science and the trajectory of numbers.

Italy now?!

Got to keep those tills ringing eh Tim?
Or we could just close forever and people can go homeless?

Agreed, but let’s be serious....models trying to guess the trajectory have been largely fear mongering garbage and did a lot of unnecessary damage.

The real answer is, no one knows.

You might want to do more research if you think the Netherlands is on the mend. Here you go..... https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

FYI - While we are all hoping for the best and supporting eachother this isn't a competition of who's country is in better standing. Only 888 new cases? Today cases are up to 992 with 262 new deaths so you might want to rethink your defensive logic and update your numbers. Italy sadly is still a mess as way too many countries are. We are talking peoples lives here not pork belly stats on the big board. Early openings are a dangerous risk....we don't get "do-overs" in life and death situations.

Do your part by staying home and peeking out of your window periodically.
