Apple retail stores now stock a configuration of the entry-level, M3 MacBook Pro with 16GB of unified memory.

The configuration, spotted by French website Consomac, is now highlighted as a standard option on Apple's website for $1,999. While the configuration itself is not new, since customers can upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of memory with a $200 build-to-order upgrade, the presence of a new default option offering this configuration allows customers to purchase an M3 MacBook Pro with 16GB of memory without any hardware upgrades. Most notably, it also means that the 16GB machine will be stocked by Apple retail stores and third-party retailers for the first time.

16/512 MBA and 16/1T MBPs should be very popular configs, other than 8/256

This being news worthy kinda exemplifies how insane it is that Apple sells a decently expensive entry-level config laptop today with a paltry 8GB of RAM.
I'd also extend it to be crazy that they're saying how great it is they are getting AI features on devices with "low amounts of memory" on the iPhone side. The top iPhones have 8 GB of RAM...either its enough RAM or its not, you can't have it both ways!

Didn't the M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14inch already start at 16 GB ram and 512GB? I swear I picked the base configuration and I have 16 GB of ram. Did they go back to 8 Gb on M2+?? Courage
The M3 Pro MacBook Pro has 18 GB RAM standard. The M3 (non-pro CPU) MacBook Pro 14" starts at 8GB. They didn't offer a M1/M2 (non-pro CPU) MacBook Pro previously.

For the same price, you can get the 11/14 M3 Pro with 18GB of RAM. It's only 512GB, but external storage is relatively cheap, whereas the processor and RAM can't be upgraded later.

Third party vendors could have stocked BTO configs any time they wanted - deluxe vendors like B&H and Adorama do. But places like Best Buy have to limit the SKUs they stock in their stores for obvious reasons so they typically only stock the standard configs, so this is a good move for those retailers.

I'm surprised by how some people can really work on just a 8GB of RAM.
Despite using a budget-friendly MacBook Pro M1 for my work, which involves running applications like Xcode, Safari, ChatGTP, Slack, SourceTree, and a couple of others, I don't have an excessive number of Safari tabs open—just a few for tasks like accessing App Store Connect or browsing GitHub and Stack Overflow.

Yet, I'm facing significant lagging issues with everything, which indicates a need for an additional 10-12GB of RAM just to meet regular requirements.

For any new Apple machine, I would never settle for 16GB; the minimum should be 32GB!
Essentially, the amount of swap being used indicates that the current amount is insufficient.

I predict the M4 base RAM will be 12GB for the iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iPad Pros. 16GB for the MacBook Pro.
This is what I predict too.

Unfortunately, they won't go to 16 GB right away. Which is shameful for Apple IMO... but hey, at least it's not 8 GB. Anyway, this is just speculation.

Apple isn't doing so well at the moment, their stock price is crashing down. That is all I am saying. And that is despite the tech sector being insane right now, especially NVIDIA.
