This being news worthy kinda exemplifies how insane it is that Apple sells a decently expensive entry-level config laptop today with a paltry 8GB of RAM.
The 8 GB RAM and alternate app store fiascos makes me think Apple no longer wants me as a customer at all, for either iPhone or Mac…This company is throwing tantrums, going out of its way to avoid anything that helps developers or increases the value of its products.

Apple Silicon was an opportunity to change from the times when Apple was selling 5400 RPM HDDs in new entry-level 4K iMacs. I was flabbergasted at how slow those things ran. But Tim Cook’s Apple will always be Tim Cook’s Apple.

A surprising move from Apple that actually benefits the consumer. (For those wondering why, most 3rd party stores don't stock the BTO configurations, meaning they are only available from Apple at full price, whilst the 3rd party stores often discount the stock configurations. Thus while the cost of an 8-16 GB upgrade is nominally £200, if a 3rd party has discounted the 8 GB model by £150, then the 8-16 GB upgrade is actually £350).

I predict the M4 base RAM will be 12GB for the iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iPad Pros. 16GB for the MacBook Pro.
A lot of us predicted that for the M3...

They really screwed up the 14" entry level MacBook Pro this year. It used be be the best bang for the buck, and now you have this mess. Go back to the way it was for gods sake.

I am actually concerned they will screw up the new base M3 Mac Studios with these sort of meth-head schemes.

It wasn't that long ago, that Retail stores had some BTO's that were higher spec. I bought my MBP 13 with a 2.3 i7, 32GB and 2TB from a store, and have done something similar for quite some time.

Ok... I gotta ask, who the heck is gonna buy this? The $1999 model with the M3 Pro and 18GB RAM and 512 GB SSD is hands down the better buy.

By trading the 1TB SSD out for a 512GB one...
You get 1 more perf core, 2 more efficiency cores, 4 more GPU cores, 2 more GB of RAM and an extra thunderbolt port. Edit: and real dual external monitor support.

I wonder if third party retailers will also have access to this SKU to stock. Apple having it readily in stock is no benefit aside from added convenience, but places like Best Buy and Amazon regularly discount the stock SKUs which means 16 GB regular M3 machines might also fetch a similar discount if carried.

The M3 MacBook Pro is overpriced and a bit of a confounding product. You can buy a M3 Pro MacBook Pro with 18GB and a 512 SSD for the $1999. Why would you buy a M3 MacBook Pro over an Air or over the M3 Pro MacBook Pro? It really makes little sense at this point.

If you don’t really need a laptop you can buy a Mac Mini with the same specs for $1199. A low-end Mac Studio is $1999.

Apple’s pricing is out of whack.

Someone that cares about weight and less about throttling. For a basic business user that travels, it's a good option.

Oh yeah totally forgot about the Mac Studio, no way the base the config stays at $1999 for 32GB of RAM and an M3 Max?

This is the Macbook Pro, not the Macbook Air. 3.4 pounds for the M3 version and 3.5 pounds for the M3 Pro version. Weight isn't a consideration here.

Apple isn't doing so well at the moment, their stock price is crashing down. That is all I am saying. And that is despite the tech sector being insane right now, especially NVIDIA.
Hint: Buy Call options right before WWDC.

No idea what they’re smoking over at Apple but I think they need a new dealer. This shouldn’t even be a conversation.

Still no sale until Space Gray returns to the Pro Pro. Try again.

14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 = 3.4 pounds (1.55 kg)
14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro = 3.5 pounds (1.61 kg)

You're telling me not only can you tell the difference between a device that's 0.06 kg lighter or heavier, but that it will make a differnce for travelers? 🤣

I was kind of hoping that would be the M3, but yeah, I've been expecting the next RAM bump would only be up to 12GB too. I know it's not a direct comparison, but it's still wild the base RAM on these models has remained unchanged for a decade.

So I misread you are you were specifically talking about only MacBooks pros on a thread about the MacBook Air?
 The title of the story (thread) here is Apple Stores Now Stock 14-Inch M3 MacBook Pro With 16GB of RAM

I'm surprised by how some people can really work on just a 8GB of RAM.
Despite using a budget-friendly MacBook Pro M1 for my work, which involves running applications like Xcode, Safari, ChatGTP, Slack, SourceTree, and a couple of others, I don't have an excessive number of Safari tabs open—just a few for tasks like accessing App Store Connect or browsing GitHub and Stack Overflow.

Yet, I'm facing significant lagging issues with everything, which indicates a need for an additional 10-12GB of RAM just to meet regular requirements.

For any new Apple machine, I would never settle for 16GB; the minimum should be 32GB!
Essentially, the amount of swap being used indicates that the current amount is insufficient.

By selling products with subpar RAM they guarantee that you will upgrade sooner... and they will cash sooner (with another subpar RAM machine..)

Wish sw makers like Microsoft, Adobe and others starts to sell sw for linux.... Apple would be in big trouble on MacOS and it's upgradeability ..
