Ugly without Apple branding. Just looks cheap.
The sad thing is, LG makes nicer looking monitors without branding, such as 32UL950-W (ugly stand notwithstanding, which can thankfully be removed):

Side note - if you're going the desktop route, why buy such a tiny display? Unless desk space is REALLY cramped...
Imho, even my 27" 5K iMac feels quite small to me nowadays (I'd upgrade to 34-38" ~6-8K iMac in a heartbeat).

It's probably to have something on offer for laptops to use.
Normal home users especially who have a 12 or 13" MacBook would naturally fit with this as a desktop solution.

Be vewy vewy quiet, we'we cawwying ewG 23.7-Inch UwtwaFine Dispways.

What’s up with that headline? If apple doesn’t send a press release to macrumors about an update, then they’re being quiet about it?! This site needs writers with journalist backgrounds, not bloggers.

Agree as I sit here with two 27" 4K monitors hooked up to my 15MBP!

Sounds like a 30” 5K display is in the works (to expand the 27” by 10%, same as the 23.7” compared to the current 21.5”).
This would imply that new iMacs with the same screens will appear soon.

Apple has never sold a standalone 4K display, Apple has never sold an iMac 4K with a 3840x2160 resolution. The PPI for this display (185 PPI) is way too low for Apple to use in any Retina iMac anyways. A 30" iMac at 5120x2880 ends up at 195PPI, which is also too low for Apple's tastes.

There is too much being read into this LG display's appearance at an Apple Store. It is most likely simply to give Apple Retail something to sell in the Store as opposed to telling someone to hoof it down to the local Best Buy to get a monitor. There is literally only one logical computer this would be bundled with and that is the 2018 Mac mini. Sure, it would work with MBA, MBP, iMac or iMac Pros, but I am pretty sure it's only job is to help keep a Mac mini sale in the Apple Store. It's not a cheap monitor and without knowing the display's specs, once can surmise that it's only real standout feature is built-in Thunderbolt 3 ports.

There are no 24" and 30" iMacs that are going to appear soon. Apple just refreshed the iMacs and that is what we are going to have going forward for quite a while.

Agreed. For a company that designs some of the slickest looking TVs in the market, this monitor reeks of ugliness. Still hoping Apple will make a 24” iMac and/or external display.

Another tiny monitor (dense postage stamp).... Not interested unless it is 32 to 40 inches. Need the screen real estate to do work on. Also, if you are doing 4k that will be projected, you need a monitor af a near similar size (huge) to be able to see any issues.

I guess you are forgetting the iMac 20"/24" of Early 2009, introduced March 3rd, 2009, that were followed by the iMac 21.5"/27" of Late 2009 on October 20th, 2009. Apple simply did a spec bump. To imply that because they just spec bumped the current design they won't introduce a new one, is simply misinformed.

"Just too small in todays world". Listen to that. Would you like a 50" TV on your desk?
Apple's 21.5" displays actually have higher resolution than any other 4K display in the market.

For a desktop monitor, 21.5" is too small in today's world of technology. The minimum size that we deploy is 24" currently and it has been that way for nearly 10 years. And I never said, nor implied, that I wanted a 50" monitor/TV on my desk. And I'm aware of the current specs from Apple on the Retina 4K display in the 21.5" iMac.

And exactly what computer am I supposed to plug this monitor into? The Mac Pro is over 3 years old and the Mac Mini won't exactly drive this monitor properly?

Why wouldn't the Mini be able to drive this? People use the (much cheaper) Dell P2415Q with the new Mini, which is also a 24" 4K display.

Oh good. So if the gpu in the monitor fails, the whole thing is trash.
All existing eGPU solutions come ASFAIK in the form of boxes with PCIe slots, ie, the graphic card can be easily switched out. My initial thoughts on monitors with eGPU capability was that that would most likely apply there as well.

Can I connect it with my MacPro (Late 2013) by using an additional TB2 to TB3 adapter?

Most likely Thunderbolt only.

That’s one incredibly expensive small monitor!! Not worth it IMO, better screens out there for less. But I guess as it’s endorsed by Apple the price must double eh?

Show me the 4K, glossy, DCI-P3 monitor that sells for less.

Picked up a refurb 21.5” 4K UltraFine for $270. Love, love, love it. Best monitor i’ve ever owned as far as brightness, PPI.

I also love that I can plug my iPad Pro into it without any fuss

Lots of people don’t want a 75” large screen TV sitting 2 inches from their eyes.

Of course the Mini will drive this monitor properly.

As will the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and the MacBook.

No, I am not forgetting. That was Apple's shift from Core 2 Duo to Core i3/i5/i7 on the iMac.

However, that was 10 years ago and that was a different Apple, Inc than today's. There are also no CPUs on the horizon from Intel to put into a revision of the iMac later this year. Comet Lake won't be here until 2020 and 10nm desktop won't be here until 2020 either.

So, if they made a shift, and actually moved to 24"/30" form factors, the move will also be to ARM and I don't think they are remotely ready for the shift, if they shift at all. Potential 24" and 30" iMacs won't be sporting 4K and 5K resolutions either, but something higher to maintain ~220PPI screens. Apple proved with the iPad Pro that they will not be restricted resolution-wise.

Apple is disciplined and in a much stricter way then they used to be, especially when it comes to the Mac. Understanding their discipline is essential to managing your own expectations about what is coming next for Apple. The rest is simply wish fulfillment and Apple does not work that way.
