Yes, that's what I meant, the monitor is doing 60Hz at 5k and MacOS is rendering the UI at a usable 2560x1440 - which IMO it does great as you can get full 4k real estate in Final Cut / Adobe but have reasonable text in Xcode, etc.
That's still not correct. What others are telling you is that it's actually rendering at 5120x2880, but using a scaled UI setting that 2560x1440 would look like.

Not sure whether a new one will be released this year. If a new one is launched this year, it will most likely be at WWDC. Higher refresh rate will be good. It should have the same price as the current model.
I hope so.

I swear Apple has like, a phobia, of making an actually useful display.

Meaning one that supports G-Sync of at least 120hz, if not a proper 240hz.

The vast, vast majority of non-gamers couldn't care less about 120+ Hz for a screen. I don't expect 120 Hz in the MacBook Air for a very long time for example. It will come sooner to the MacBook Pro though.

Your comment is just as condescending as theirs.

Spreadsheets can be done on monochrome displays... of course it's just 'fine' to you.

I work with graphics all day. I don't need a 4K 480hz display. I need a large pixel-perfect display that's suited for macOS.
I work with graphics all day too, so I’ll gladly take a 4k 480hz G-Sync display.

And the RTX card to run it.

Those alliance neckbeards aren’t going to unalive themselves, after all.

excel is literally unusable if it's not 8k dolby vision

In Surround Sound.

Has to be Dolby Atmos, though. :p

With AR/VR/MR and the democratization of display tech, Apple has to bring an update in 2025. No way around it for Apple. BenQ, Asus and no-name Chinese brands have 5K options in 2025 that are on par with ASD at half the price. From 2026 there will literally be no reason to choose an ASD over other reputable brands unless it has compelling upgrades/pricing.

Never underestimate the market for an Apple-branded product. You may dismiss it as "sheepism", but a surprising number of people find enough value in OEM single-sourcing.

I resisted purchasing the ASD and very much regretted it. Instead I purchased the HUAWEI mate view which is 28” and a bit taller - great for word docs and coding. Colour accuracy wasn’t great even with manual calibration. I also got a Samsung ark and use it in cockpit mode so a 55” 165hz older monitor but 4k at 55” is 💩 terrible for writing or reading text, I use it to store utility, media (Spotify, music) and some productivity apps. The 5k iMac just stood out amongst the other 2. The money I spent on the Samsung I could have spent another $1500 for Pro Display XDR or got one for slightly less on eBay. I’m out off for life from Samsung manifold, contains issues with not waking, constantly needing to reedit the connection type and play with game mode. This was all with the 5k iMac , since pairing it with the m4 max MBP god I miss my iMac screen I tried to leave my iMac and use it as an external display over thunderbolt, better screen display virtualising a 5k environment mirrored on to the iMac as 5k (1440p HIDIP) but it wasn’t as good and caused all kinds of kernel panics when system went to sleep
Despite being from 2020 and the last intel iMac gbe 27” i9 was performing rock solid, but couldn’t work as a external display for my m4 despite trying a few different solutions - even over thunderbolt

I feel if apple keep the prices as they are the ASD2 should be 6k TB5 at 120hz mini LED and the XDR2 being 8k 120hz- for the price I’d think oled would be requisite but I know for professional displays of this calibre some say oled have a number of drawbacks.

Sorry IDK what you mean by "or Apple supporting 4K displays from 3rd party brands." I have been driving three 4K Viewsonic displays with MBPs for many years now and am unaware of limitations on driving 3rd party brands.

I do agree that cheaper is what Apple needs with the Studio line. Value of displays in general has been increasing rapidly and Apple needs to follow suit. I also think that they should have a 32" Studio Display in the mix at a civilized price.

1. Scaling issues.
2. Performance problems.
3. Inconsistent color management.
4. Refresh rate limitations.
5. Compatibility with external monitors.
6. Multiple monitor support.
7. No FreeSync/G-Sync support.
8. Limited third-party app optimization.
9. Font rendering issues.

Apple released a new display a year ago, fitting in price wise between the XDR and Studio. It’s called Vision Pro. :)

Samsung Display (which makes display panels, but not actual monitors) showed off a 27" 5K OLED 220 ppi display.

For HDR for example. It bears repeating yet again, even if the average screen brightness is set at say 150 nits in a light controlled room, you still may want to have highlights at 700 nits for some content, but that 700 nits stuff may only occupy 2% of the screen. Movies are mastered to 1000 to 4000 nits, so if your max brightness is 400 nits, then everything from 400-4000 nits is completely lost in a sea of white, unless you compress the brightness levels (tone mapping) to match the display. Meanwhile, some video games are mastered to 10000 nits.

Or you may work in a very bright environment. A setting of even 250 nits for overall brightness may be inadequate.

I'm curious. What are you colouring?
Primarily video footage, often photos. I work in a very controlled environment when it comes to lighting.
