Unfortunately monitor from Apple makes less sense for me than anything else. Can not figure out what is it that justifies the price except for Apple label.
If I compare this to Eizo, which is similar top price “luxury”, even better for same price. And comparing to low tier companies, Samsung, Yiiama 43 inch for half the price.
All these response times and refresh rates make little difference, tiny tiny bit of difference. The panel is IPS and does what IPS can do.
For sure Apple monitor looks nice. But why there is chip and firmware, i do not know. Why mix good monitor with average camera and average speakers ?

I ordered one from Amazon a few months ago and the service was terrible. It was lost in shipment and Amazon's automatic web tools wouldn't give me a refund. Eventually I had to penetrate Amazon's thicket of web forms to figure out how to talk to a human, who finally canceled the order and credited my card. All this took about a month.

I ended up ordering one from Best Buy and doing in-store pickup and had it the same day.

I have had other issues with bulky or high-dollar items from Amazon. Frequently they arrive late - it seems bulky, expensive things (monitors and office chairs for example) follow different fulfillment channels than the cheap dreck that is so much of Amazon's volume, but their tracking does not account for this so the items do not show up when promised, if at all.

I order cheap trinkets from Amazon quite frequently, but now I avoid getting high-dollar things from them.

I have had my Studio display since it was released and I still love it.

Recently purchased an Alienware QD-OLED & LG WOLED as possible upgrades, both 32 inch. I ended up sending them both back.

They had nice color, but were not accurate and many times were over saturated. The 240Hz refresh rate was noticeable, but 60Hz works for me for normal use. The larger size was nice, but there were too many tradeoffs.

The Studio display was sharper, excellent color accuracy, great speakers, a decent webcam, superior build quality, and no risk of burn in. Plus neither of the monitors played nice with my MacBook Pro. With the Studio display all I need is one Thunderbolt cable.

I know they are expensive, but so far I haven't found a better replacement. Please don't hate me.:)

Amazon today has the Apple Studio Display for $1,299.99, down from $1,599.00, which is a match of the all-time low price on the monitor. This is the standard glass version of the Studio Display with the tilt adjustable stand, and Amazon also has a few other models on sale as well.

You can get the standard glass model with the VESA Mount Adapter for $1,299.99, down from $1,599.00, but there isn't currently a sale on the tilt- and height-adjustable stand model. In regards to the VESA model, this is a match of the all-time low price on the display.

If you want to upgrade to the nano-texture glass option, Amazon also has this model of the Studio Display on sale. It's available for $1,599.00, down from $1,899.00, which is a second-best price on the Studio Display with nano-texture glass.

The Studio Display features a 27-inch 5K retina display with a 5120 x 2880 resolution and up to 600 nits of brightness. Apple says that the standard display is engineered for "extremely low reflectivity," but for rooms where there is a lot of glare, Apple suggests the nano-texture glass option with even less reflectivity.

Interesting... I'm not sure they would do this but it would be cool.

What if this was updated with the same features as the new Smart Display HomePod? This already is Apple's smartest display with an iPhone chip, screen, speakers, and mics. I don't see how they would balance the smart features and acting as a traditional monitor. Just saying it would be cool if they did.

Spot-on. I suspect many people here are not into photography and care little about color accuracy and different profiles.

And thus the value proposition doesn't make sense to them. They're better off getting an LG/Dell/Asus/HP/etc.

Correct. The 2016 LG 5K is 90% of what this monitor is for $400 on eBay (minus the gorgeous aluminum frame)
Is that $400 price in new condition, or pre-owned/gray market/fell off a truck? I'm all for buying used/refurb, but you can't hold up price comparisons against new-in-box-with-warranty or "nearly free, and even possibly partly working or easily repairable, from your local e-waste recycling facility" wins for every model.

A monitor that's not even half as good as the newest Dell and Samsung models is twice as expensive, even at the "record low price."

OLED? Nope. Fast response time? Nope. High refresh rate? Nope. Easily used across multiple platforms (i.e., Mac and Windows)? Nope.

Give me all the hate you want, but this is my opinion, and it ain't changing.

My understanding is that won't be happening anytime soon due to the bandwidth requirements. Thunderbolt 4 can't handle a 120Hz Apple Studio Display.
Thunderbolt 4…. Can’t handle 120hz.

Yet my Mac Studio

VIA THUNDERBOLT is running multiple 144hz 4K HDR 32” displays.

Right now. With zero issue.

I think Apple is being cheap and using outdated LG panels to save a buck. And they TOLD YOU thunderbolt couldn’t handle it.

I still cannot understand why 5K displays in 2024 are so expensive. Didn't Apple first come out with 5K displays 10 years ago in the iMac?

I just bought another nice LG display, 27" 4K HDR400 99% sRGB on Prime Day for $269. Is it as nice as the Studio Display? No. Is it close enough for the price? You bet. I already had one and this is my second of this model. I have a little bit older LG 4K that I moved upstairs for my standing desk and for my family to use which is fine for most work as well. I have a colorimeter that I use to calibrate and they are completely fine for photo and design work, especially the model I just bought.

I just really don't get the point of buying the Studio Display when I could buy nearly five of these for the price of the Studio Display, when they are both on sale. To me, the studio display would be worth its full price if it had 120Hz and MiniLED or OLED. Doesn't need to have the crazy HDR found in the XDR display. Or the 6K. Just want 27" 5K for my main display again like my old 27" iMac, but with a refresh rate and black level similar to my 14" MBP, so that everything matches better. Again, don't need an XDR, especially with that crazy price. If Apple can put this kind of display into a 14" MBP that costs $1599 and has a whole computer along with it, then why couldn't they make a 27" version that is only a display for the same or similar price? It's 3024 x 1964 vs. 5120 × 2880. I don't even care if they leave out the ridiculous webcam features with the A-series chip and two extra Thunderbolt ports (so it can still daisy chain).

Agreed, but what do you mean it’s not easily used across platforms? You can plug windows machines into it no?

You're on a 4K display. A 5K display at 120Hz requires more bandwidth. Contrary to what the numbers might suggest, a 5K display is much more resource intensive than a 4K display. Driving a 4K display (8.3 million pixels) at 144Hz is less demanding than driving a 5K display (14.7 million) at 120Hz.

The super expensive 6K XDR display maxes out at 60Hz. Dell has an 8K display, but to drive it at its max refresh rate of 60Hz requires use of 2 DisplayPort ports.

There are technology constraints. I suppose we could see a 4K ProRes display, but a 5K version ain't coming until those bandwidth limits are addressed.

Probably because it's such a niche market. For the longest time the LG 5K was the only game in town. Finally, other options began to show up that weren't Apple specific, but right at that time the 5K iMac gets discontinued so we have one step forward and one step back regarding the demand for 5K screens.

I mean isn't this effectively what the 27" iMac 5K display was? And many were happy with that.

So I'm fine with no 120hz, 6K or 8K. Just re-release this as the base display for $999

A big difference is that the Best Buy sale never includes the VESA Adapter version or it sells out immediately. The VESA mount version is typically the hardest one to get your hands on.

I waited and waited for that one to be discounted. I finally gave up in January and got one at full price. I've enjoyed my monitor so no regrets.
"VESA mount version." Man, nothing screams "captive audience" like the idea that you have to buy a specific version of a $1200 monitor (or pay extra for an adapter) just to have the privilege of VESA mounting it.

That's a good price ($1,299) and value. Being a photographer and very fussy about color, I love my Studio Display and use it everyday processing photos in Lightroom. The only one better is Apple's Pro Display XDR, but didn't want to pay the price.

It's not. You used to be able to get an iMac with the same 5k monitor for this price.

My understanding is that won't be happening anytime soon due to the bandwidth requirements. Thunderbolt 4 can't handle a 120Hz Apple Studio Display.

People playing video games might be happy with running the monitor at 1440p in order to get 120 hz. And given Apple's control of both the monitor and Mac, they ought to be the first ones to get 5k/120hz working.

Edit:
Wait a minute. It looks to me like 5k/120 is fewer pixels per second than 8k/60, which already works. Ugg...

4K and 32" are highly unlikely (if not never) to come from Apple, as this combination isn't Retina.
The Pro Display XDR is 6K and 32", maintaining 218 PPI.
"Retina" is not a technical definition. It is a marketing term. Any combination can be "retina" if Apple says it is.

Both Dell and BenQ (and I'm sure a few others) make incredibly well-calibrated monitors that work just as well as the ASD for photography. I shouldn't be that hard to forget that Apple had ignored that entire market for quite a number of years between the last and the current iteration of the Studio Displays came out.

There are a lot of people who are into photography and care a great deal about colour accuracy. They just care more about the output on the front than the logo on the back.
