I've been a fan of Apple displays since the Cinema HD acrylic version from the early 2000s.

Every year and every iteration chipped away at that fanboy-ism in me, and these new versions up against the competition has killed it.

Other than, "I have the money," or "I need the XDR," there's not much of a reason to get either .... and even the XDR, while fantastic, is a stretch for colorists.

That being said, I'll look for deals on the previous model since it's virtually unchanged.

What's the difference between this and the previous generation, again?

With the other 5K120+ monitors announced from other manufacturers already, I'm not really sure what would draw someone to the Studio Display anymore.
Depending on which one you refer to:

* Brightness
* Support term length
* Speakers
* TB5
* Webcam
* Integrated controls

That would be anyone fussy about color stability who processes photos (in Adobe Lightroom for me). Using mine for a couple of years has been a breath of fresh air. Set it up once using one of its built-in profiles and have never needed to tweak it.

Before my ASD I used a large screen LG display. That constantly drifted, needing to recalibrate using a puck calibrator. Wasted a lot of expensive printer ink and paper dealing with that over the years.

Apple Studio Display is not for gamers or for those hanging out on forums, or surfing the web.

Yeah, I used many mediocre monitors with Mac over the years. The last one before switching was the NEC 27 inch PA272. I am not entirely sure about the exact gamut coverage of the Apple Studio Display, but it was refreshing upgrade. started with one Apple Studio Display, then added a second, and now I run three. The productivity boost for editing photos and video has absolutely been worth every penny. would love to have three Pro Display XDR monitors, but I have not won the lottery yet. I was tempted to buy the 32 inch XDR back when it first came out, but glad I went with multiple screens instead. The extra screen real estate is much more useful for all the non visual work too.

Not even design anymore because third party monitors used to be quite ugly but they’ve been getting pretty good with the ultra slim bezels. Plus an arm theyre much better than the base studio display

I haven't looked at the other 5k120 monitors, but decent speakers and a web cam are usually lacking from other monitors. While those may be minor to some, having everything in a single package does carry weight.

I read the comments here and understand why Apple keeps selling its underwhelming monitors at such a ridiculous price: there will always be fans ready to pay top dollar for old tech repackaged as the latest and greatest, as long as it's "designed by Apple".
its bc they dont want to sell a lot of them.

look at the competition. the entire market is saturated with mid tier and low tier options.

and at the highest tier (mastering displays 10-25k) there isn't any volume to sell at to affect apples revenue.

I gave up waiting for the right Apple monitor last year. Landed on an open-box Dell U4025QW ultra-wide for $1100.

It's 5k2k, 120hz, multiple inputs... and yeah, surprisingly Dell even shipped decent macOS support for the first time I've ever seen with a little menubar utility. Has full audio/brightness controls from the keyboard.

Okay, this might justify $300~400 dollars extra vs the competition, but not $1500~2000. Especially when the competition is reaching 5k180 at this point.

The price never made sense, but if it's like the 5k60 monitors, there really was no option with those things built in. It's cheap to add those after the fact, but not as clean. I spent a decent amount on a 5k60 monitor and in hindsight would have paid double for speakers and a web cam built in (good ones).
