I would really love to get this monitor, because it ticks all the boxes. I own a lot of Apple things, but no PC...I just have Win11 PC. I know that the Displays do not work with it or at least that you can't access settings or firmware updates or anything. Is this still an issue in 2026 with the new XDR that came out...? :/ I do a lot of productivity and picture editing - but also like to play games from time to time. I know that there is LG and other brands coming out with the same panel, but the software behind it is (rumoured) to not be that great with the algorithm and other stuff. Is it even possible to get the full 5k 120hz with a Windows Pc? Because if not, its already pointless.

I was honestly already thinking about to buy a cheap Macbook / Mac Mini - or a used one somewhere (im from EU) to at least access settings and doing firmware Updates. Is this a dumb idea...?

Would be great if anyone can advice me and enlighten me on what to do or if I should forget about the Apple Display. 😅

I’m not being facetious, but have you tried researching this topic? There is a wealth of information already available online. What does Gemini say when you ask?

Doing whatever it takes to get away from Microslop is never a dumb idea.
Im a gamer and also do a lot of Ai related content creation. So Windows is the only option for me. But thanks for the unnecessary useless answer.

I did. And that’s why I came here to post about it. Because obviously there is not much information out there….

WTF is up with the attitude? You asked if it was dumb to get a mini, I said no. You can use it to do your non-Windows stuff.

The support for 5k120hz is totally possible with Apple Studio XDR on Windows 11 (and it's actually more supported out of the box on Linux than Windows), that's already proven without a doubt.

The limiting issue here is the cable and port. You need a min of nvidia rtx 5900 (displayport 2.1/hdmi 2.1) or AMD graphic card with HDMI 2.1 port to drive 5k120hz without compression. You'd need to fallback to DSC compression for DP1.4, which requires special drivers and support in OS.

Right now, even 4090 can't drive 5k@120hz with the latest nvidia drivers, it keeps failing to 640x640 due to some hardware issue; possible DSC or firmware bugs. We're using Jan 2026 nvidia drivers to use it at 5k@60hz for now.

After the drivers issue, you then have limited support for managing the settings; there's not much dev support out there for this; you can't use truetone, HDR support is very little to adjust its brightness and so on.

Keep in mind for gaming, you'll have some issues with gsync and other stuff, the upcoming 5k monitors from LG and others would at least have better native refresh rate and dual zone features that's better for gaming. You will not be able to do this with Apple Studio Display XDR. Gsync "compatible" will still work but it'll be at mercy of the nvidia drivers, not display's compatibility support.

Since we're using Jan 2026 drivers just to use 5k@120hz, we can't benefits from all nvidia improvements since Jan to play games at their best settings. OTA profile updates still work fine but certain DLSS stuff will not work optimal without the latest drivers for some games.

The new Apple Studio Display is plug and play with Windows, no fuss, all features work out the box...

With the new XDR display it is a whole different thing. As stated above in the replies, it has a lot of factors involved as to how well it works, I have a works supplied Dell laptop for instance so I have gone for the Studio Display, not the XDR as I have no chance of playing around with editing files and drivers to get it to work.

But.. I will say even my standard Studio Display is a PHENOMENAL monitor. It has been fantastic to use with both my Mac and Windows laptops. If you are willing to get it working the XDR will be even better.
