A docking station doesn't seem very Apple to me. The simplicity of most Apple products exists because of their standalone setup. That simplicity is lost with the loss of an optical drive, and whatever other sacrifices they might have made with the Sub Notebook. I'd sacrifice a little more money and a bit of extra weight for a built in optical drive any day. Other companies have done it, why can't Apple just make a thinner one? Toshiba made one much less than a half an inch...so, unless there is some great advantage to having a docking station (one without a screen or anything), what's the point?

Because there are a whole lot of Cartman's out there who have to have their Chipokemon dolls. ;)

Isn't a 64 Gb drive disappointing?

Despite the potential pluses of an SSD drive, I'd be bummed to have a limit of 10s of gigs in internal storage.
I survive on my EEEPC, that has 4GB, a lot taken up by the operating system

Did I imagine the iPod/iPhone docks?
Neither the iPhone nor the iPod lacks any functionality when away from the dock. The dock to go with this Sub Notebook would add a function that could, theoretically, be in the notebook itself.

I'm really hoping for the following: The macbook turns aluminum or some other material other than the current, macbook pro's get an all new design, and the sub-notebook will hopefully be around 12 inches like the old powerbook. Here's to hoping!

As for design, I want to see all of the laptops become more durable. I don't mind the weight, just make them more durable. The current aluminum is to thin and soft, and the macbook plastic is way to brittle.

YEA! Someone get it!

Not only are the cases somewhat weak, but the design limits Apple only to what they can fit inside of that tiny space. I would like to see a design that looks good, is somewhat thin, but gives us more room for better BTO options across the line. I would love to see a MacBook that could be customized as much as the Dell M1330. Or a 17" MBP with enough space for more ports, dual HDDs, and overclocked processors.

I say redesign ALL of the books.

I couldn't agree more, and lets also hope they bring the user replaceable hard drive to the MBP and the new ultra portable. ;)

Yeah, this would be great. Gives these machines more longevity and even the option of having two separately setup machines.

I DO NOT want a regular hard drive in the "Macbook Air." Flash Memory will do fine as that is what will make it "Ultra-Portable." And the lack of an optical drive...I really think this Mac is going to be more of a companion to your main system...especially with the rumor of this recent name and all, it must be VERY light...

As for user replaceable hard drives in the Macbook Pro, sure, it should...

Ultra portables do contain normal spinning hard drives though.

They should give users a choice. Flash HDs are all great but how much flash memory are you going to need for an OSX installation alone? A decent amount of storage will be expensive.

How about a 1.8" (iPod sized) hard drive option? It would be light on battery usage compared to a standard 2.5" laptop drive and much cheaper than all flash.

But it would be SO SLOW. About as slow as the iPod Classic, which is pushing the limits of insanly slow.

Or a dual drive device, with 8 gb flash for the OS, crit files and some Apps, and 1.8" user accessible for media, iDisk etc.

That optical drive takes up nearly half of the case.

WoW. and what do you need that extra space for anyway? more storage for your porno collection?

I dont see a problem with opical drives. have a BTO order for those who dont want it and those who do can have them

that will end all the cring and b******* that goes on about this.

I don't know why people are whining about optical drives. They really don't take up that much space or weight. But who knows, people are getting weaker these days, especially rich Americans.

getting up from the couch and put in a disc on another computer is not really weak. but again it takes up more time.

Not everyone has 2 or more computers in the house, nor do they want to spend an extra 100 on an external opical drive. I dont know why people are complaning. Just have a BTO offer for no opical drive and those who do want one can have it. THAT will end the fuss.

I like that one. Hope it makes it. But a black keyboard.

I'm so confused. Why was this thread revived so many months after it was made obsolete?
