And when it's all said and done, ya know who the only winner is? The lawyers.

Exactly. The foundation of pretty much everything out there right now was taken from the iPhone. And I am sure Apple stole a bunch from other places to develop the iPhone. Its not really going to get anywhere at this point. Hence why Microsoft is now in the game as well.

Perhaps the cost of these devices would become lower if they weren't so busy in lawsuits.

Let's just move on. In 2010 technology thrives from sharing ideas. It's an ecosystem... Someone makes something, then another company takes that idea, makes it better, and then someone takes THAT idea and makes it better, and so on and so on.

Wow.. So buy using the word "takes" in place of "Steals" does that somehow make you feel better.

If the world worked like this what would be the incentive for companies to spend a dime on R&D? That is why there is a time limit on patents, after so many years the idea can be "taken" legally, and improved on.

Until that time however the company, be it Apple, Moto, MS, or Google for that matter get something back for their time/money spent.

This is very lame and ridiculous... Apple has NOT invented multipoint touchscreens... although they have got the patent...
Once again... we have an example of how patents are stupid and useless (at least in US...).

Forgive my stupidity, but who invented the multipoint touchscreen then?

Without Android OS Motorola can not make these phones

The iOS and Android support many PC technologies. Motorola, Samsung, and HTC have no engineering talents to make such OS. Nokia and RIMM are in similar situation. Nokia and RIMM have some smartphone OS but they do not support all PC technologies. This is why they are losing maket share despite being no. 1 and 2 before.

Apple lost the PC war to Windows because it failed to prevent Microsoft to copy most of the Mac OS user interface.

The good and the bad...

Of course, there is good and bad that comes out of Patents. This sort of IP protection is very common... sometimes to defend their IP... which they should. It takes time and money to invent this stuff and if someone comes up with something truly unique, they should be able to control it... that's what patents are for. Other times they counter sue in a move to negate the other companies lawsuits so they can both drop suits and carry on.

The only patent thing that makes me mad is patent trolls. They are the worst form of life on this planet. Sadly... they tend to wait and pounce when the dollars are big.

But please people... there is no big evil Apple or Motorola, or anyone here... this is just each company trying to protect what they can and clear the way to move on. These are details you just don't normally see in the public and get resolved out of court.

I'm never buying another lottery ticket again.

Instead I'm going to sit the California bar and specialise in intellectual property rights. Cher-ching.

When SJ first showed multi-touch on the iPhone at Macworld in 2007, he said "Boy have we patented it!"

Guess he was serious.

I wonder if I could get the patent for the process of inhaling and exhaling air using biological bags...

Pay attention to this first sentence because it's the core of what you need to comprehend before ranting: That's not what the patent is.

Apple doesn't have a patent on multitouch touch screen interfaces. They don't have a patent on multitouch. They don't have a patent on touch screens. They DO have a patent for a specific implementation of a multitouch touch screen interface in a specific commercial product for a specific purpose.

Your rant is an embarrassing strawman argument. It's like saying a bike company cannot patent a new type of tire because "they can't patent rubber! They don't own the concept of a bike tire! WHAT NEXT? ARE THEY GOING TO PATENT THE WHEEL?!"

Those kinds of responses only reveal that the person speaking has no idea what patents are and what they are intended to protect. I guess it's too much to ask that people understand what something is before railing against it.

As much as I love apples products it sickens me how they steal a fairly new idea and pass it off as their own. This seems to have been there strategy ever sense the mouse. Don't you think?

Wait WTF when I read those patents I don't understand how apple was able to make those patents. I mean what did they have to bribe? We all know apple didn't invent this.

No kidding. Samsung could really cripple Apple if they all of a sudden cut off their flash memory supply.

In a way I wish they'd do that. Send a message.

Presumably, Samsung benefits from their business arrangements with Apple as well and would also be careful not to disturb that. Perhaps they have some IP sharing agreements.

Translation: "I don't understand what patents are."

well this screws with Moto Mobiles first quarterly gain in a long time ...it was on engadget... now they'll be paying layers
