You cheat, you lose. No sympathy here. Hope its another sign to Apple that the need to move production and supply chains out of China is a necessary thing.
What does this have to do with China? Same thing could have happened with western suppliers. Guess Dieselgate never happened (first example that came to mind). Edit: See @switz above on how Boeing hid the MAX changes and killed hundreds of people.

Wonder if this unapproved change lead to more crappier screens and returns for apple

Apple shouldn’t be using garbage like BOE for a $1k phone anyways geez

It'd be one thing to ask Apple about changing the design, but to do it without asking? That's basically bait-and-switch, trying to ship a part that isn't what was agreed upon and paid for.

BOE should probably stop waiting. It's probably not gonna happen.

For an interesting take on the way things really work in China one should look at the channel Adv China on YouTube. I’ve really learned a lot about the culture and the way things are done there from the two hosts of this excellent channel.

Regards…
Oh boo hoo scary stu(ff)

Not a good move to change things without Apple’s prior approval. Anyway Samsung and LG displays should be of better quality. BOE could win back some orders later on in product life cycle.

You must have read a different article. The macrumors article does not speculate on the reason for the change being "to save costs" (it may have actually increased costs if it uses more material) nor does it state that the change was "caught by the apple QA team" rather than being informed by the company themselves. You made assumptions beyond the facts.

“No liberty to make design changes without approval.”

As a person who's had to deal with Chinese suppliers deviating out of our specifications; I can definitely say that this is a pretty common occurrence unfortunately.
