At this rate, I might as well wait for the 2030 iPhone so I can get the best bang for my bucks.
That's the reason I keep my iPhone for at least 3 years because Apple takes their time to really come out with something that is worth the price they are asking. My iPhone XS works great so maybe I will change it for whatever comes out in 2021. My 2012 MacBook Pro Retina Display on the other hand is in need of a change but the 16 inch MacBook Pro isn't yet fulfilling all the wishes on my checklist, maybe this year's model will do just that or next year's model in 2021 then I can change it at the same time with the iPhone.

I definitely don’t need always-on for my iPhone, especially when I have my Watch 5 on my wrist to give me updates. But being able to reduce power consumption by dropping down to a really low refresh rate when I’m reading an email or looking at a static web page, would be great. I have a feeling that with broader 5G implementation, batteries are going to be taxed pretty heavily and Apple will need to find ways they can save energy in other areas.

5G Is still the most important thing this year anyways... personally I just want greater coverage. a 3X or more zoom camera would be icing on the cake

I don’t get why a new screen tech is needed for AOD.. other OEMS such as Samsung have been doing AOD for a while.
right? I have friends with all sorts of random androids that have had the time or random graphics bouncing across the screen at all times for many years now...

I am still using my iPhone 6s Plus. It still does everything I need and only needs to have its battery changed. Newer phones offer me nothing that I really want except for a better screen and even then, I'd rather wait until my current product completely bites the dust before I purchase anything else.

As many's sarcastic comments say, all the progresses have been something the majority of us don't care for (especially if it costs us more) and/or don't understand what it is, to me since iPhone 6 or so perhaps. All is to satisfy the engineers' curiosities or give something to the YouTube reviews to talk about. If this energy saving display is the major selling point, it doesn't make me buy a new model. What is a function you would want your phone to have, I'm not expecting it to fly like a drone but a function to make it a mini projector, would be fun? Am I childish, maybe.

Same. As a lifelong “cluster” migraine sufferer, it’s a hard pass for me, let alone the other down sides.
I do okay on the 11Pro. (Previous iterations made me very sick) But my family got just got me an iPhone SE 2020 and it’s a little bit more in my comfort zone. I think the Face ID module contributed to a gritty feel in my eyes sometimes.

Every time I hear of Apple making changes with their OLED displays I get the same concerns you do.

LTPO would be significant for iPhones

not only for refresh rate but also for efficient AoD options.

This would be huge for battery management as well

shame we won’t get it this year

Reading email and casually browsing web pages is when I appreciate the higher refresh rate :) This is just from me getting used to the 120hz on an iPad Pro, and the 144hz on my computer monitor. Webpage scrolling is so buttery smooth. It's a bit strange to me that I can tell when my mouse cursor looks laggy, almost blurry going across my screen when it's 60hz. I am really hoping for 120hz on the next iPhone.

I REALLY hope this is for a AOD (and overall improved battery life) as opposed to a requirement for 120hz. If we do not get 120hz this year I will be remarkably saddened.

Apple is always behind the curve with basic things, why not use OLED already or AMOLED. Then they announce features in such a way of excitement & brand new when really competitors had for a year or more. Apple is funny.
Apple does use OLED. What are you saying?

This may be the tech they are seeking for an always on display.
As the watch showed it is only a piece of the puzzle. Apple didn’t include always on until they integrated LTPO AND a screen with variable refresh rate they could dial down to save power.

If only Apple would use it to increase battery life instead of lowering the battery capacity to get another millimeter of thickness reduction or an unnoticeable gram or two of mass reduction. Even improved performance would be better than either. That or a case that I don't need to add a case to in order to protect the iPhone or add more battery to the damn thing. I'd also like to see them do something about eliminating the need for adapter cables. USB-A and Lightning are old tech and made unnecessary by wireless charging, Bluetooth 5 headphones/earbuds and WiFi or 5G for moving data.

Move on Apple. Embrace 21st century tech before civilization craters into the come second millennium dark ages.

The iphone has been getting thicker each year for years, and battery life has been going up. What are you going on about?

Apple thickened up the iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max to get a larger battery in there, where have you been?

Apple has the fastest SoC in a smartphone, where have you been?

A case is pretty much the standard for everyone now in the era of $1000+ smartphones. This is nota new problem or unique to Apple.

Wireless charging sucks, I have an iPhone XR and have zero use for a Qi charger. Complete crap.

iPhone has BT 5.0 and 802.11AX with the fastest 4G LTE, soon to be 5G. Do you live under a rock?

USB and Lightning serve a purpose. I don’t want a port free iPhone, personally. The headphone jack, fine, but not port free.

Embrace 21st century tech? Do you even know what you’re talking about?

Apple's supply chain partners are already developing OLED displays using LTPO backplane technology for 2021 iPhones, according to DigiTimes.

iphone-11-pro-display-video.jpg

A paywalled preview of the report reads as follows:LTPO technology would result in a more power efficient backplane, which is responsible for turning individual pixels on and off on the display. This could pave the way for longer battery life and/or new features like ProMotion or an always-on display.

While leakers Max Weinbach and Jon Prosser have claimed that ProMotion is a possibility on some 2020 iPhones, display analyst Ross Young believes that LTPO is essential if Apple plans to support ProMotion on the iPhone, as it would allow for a variable refresh as low as 1Hz when the device is inactive in order to optimize battery life.

The full report should be released by tomorrow, so we will update our coverage at that time if there are additional details.

isn't this ltpo whole thing in conflict with the microled rumors?

Sounds like ProMotion is on this year’s models is dubious at best.
Not really, LTPO has nothing to do with pro motion for this year.

LTPO will make things better due to not needing as much power so battery life won’t be affected.

The issues apple have had this year won’t be an issue next year because of LTPO. Doesn’t mean pro motion isn’t coming this year.

promotion 120hz isn't gonna come this year :( bummer
That’s not what this is saying at all...LTPO in 2021 does not affect pro motion for 2020.

You do realise LTPO isn’t on any phone right now, right?

Samsung are debuting it on the note 20 plus. Then everybody else will get it
[automerge]1591359564[/automerge]
Better battery life?

This is the oldest lie.
What lie? LTPO should mean the screen uses 20% less power.

“Samsung’s new 120Hz refresh mode is quite a power-hungry beast, which alters the battery life formula for this year’s flagships.”

If Apple skips ProMotion this year, we know why, and why they are working on LTPO tech for 2021.

It’s a power hungry beast because they weren’t able to implement something like the Pro Motion (24hz, 30hz, 48hz, 60hz and 120hz).

The LPTO is a different thing though, is goes all the way down to 1Hz, but the battery life is somehow weaker compared to the Series 4.
