Wow that's quite a rant, sorry to hear you had such trouble. Thanks for the rundown at the end of the post too, it's good to get the basics understood.
Luckily for me, I have located an Apple Certified repair store about five minutes from where I live and they say that they can do repairs under the standard Apple Warranty if/when things go wrong.
I feel a lot better for writing it I still think, though, that even if the nearest repair centre is only 5 minutes away, that it's an insult to put the onus for the repair on the paying customer, not the company that sold a faulty computer. I don't know any other company that does that. Hell, when my dad's cappuccino machine broke they not only collected it and delivered it once repaired, they gave him another machine to use during the repair! That's service.
