There are no assumptions to me made. Personally speaking, I will NEVER get AIDS because I don't engage in activities where I am vulnerable.
I hope you never get it but even careful people have contracted it. A mistake with transfused blood or failed contraception with somebody who is HIV positive have occurred. It’s not a disease where the carrier can be easily condemned or snubbed.

Totally preventable... assuming you know about it and how it spreads (this is where we need attention). I can TOTALLY prevent myself from getting it. Keep non-medical needles out of my body, and keep my johnson out of unapproved holes. Tada... completely protected.

Stop looking for a cure and start looking to prevent the spread... it isn't that hard.

I wonder how many people wont get this...

You can get it without having sex.

There's a lot of very good researchers out there, but they have no knowledge or interest in the funding or finance of their work. They want to help people. My daughter is currently in a study at the local children's hospital. I do talk to the research doctors and they are brilliant, kind, wonderful people.

But the fact remains that this research is used for profit and will be done regardless of donations because companies want to do the R&D for the profits.

If you think I'm wrong you show me any evidence of benefit that has come from donations to medical research. Good life-saving treatment that nobody is making a profit on. It doesn't exist. And if it's a for-profit product it would have been created anyway in the pursuit of profit.

There is not profit in the cure :) though lots of research in prolonging / living with as long as you have a dependency on the drugs .

Dear Mac Rumors,

Please don’t open posts like this for general or off topic responses. Even though not everyone is able to respond, everyone is able to read some of the hateful homophobic/racist and bigoted responses. This is not exclusively an adult site and I can imagine some younger readers are being exposed to this hate on an Apple gadget fan site. Maybe they even think some of the more bigoted commenters are cool and edgy.
I don’t know if you do it out of willful ignorance or you do it to keep the numbers up, but it is detrimental to your otherwise great site. I hope you allow this response to stay up and at least think about what you should allow responses on in the future. The world/USA has not been this upended in a very long time and we don’t need to be fueling anymore dissent.

hateful homophobic/racist and bigoted responses.
It's amusing how facts trigger an immediate blanket assumption of someone's social/political views.

I won't, period. I've been married to the same person for 33 years and we don't cheat on each other and we don't do drugs using needles. The only way for me is a lousy blood transfusion but that's remote to the extreme.

In the United States, yes, for sure. The spread of AIDS in the US in primarily in the homosexual community. Practicing safe sex or simply keeping it in your pants is the cure for AIDS in the US, homo or hetero.
Never heard of PrEP?
Because in developed nations it primarily affects homosexuals and homosexuals are a favored political group of Apple and other left of center companies.

If cancer or diabetes were primarily "homosexual" diseases, or African American diseases, or Latino diseases, you can bet they'd have their own "days."
This type of comment is exactly why there's a World AIDS Day. It's as much about countering prejudice as anything else.

Anyone can catch HIV. Not just gays, drug addicts, or Africans.

I’ve just read this and had to remind myself it’s 2017 and not 1983.

A lot needs to be done to educate people about HIV and AIDS even in this day and age. People ask why world AIDS day gets so much fuss and attention and your post is the very reason.

I probably won't get it either (with the same guy now for 27 years, monogamous, no drug use), but the main cause of the spread of AIDS worldwide is non-consensual sex / rape, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and in developing countries.

Yes, it's great that you and I are unlikely to get AIDS, but there are a lot of people in developing countries (and, indeed, our own) who will continue to contract it, so ongoing development for medical treatment is still necessary.

No where did I say "cure", I said "treatment". And I don't disagree with you at all.

But the fact remains that all this R&D is being done for profit, the companies are already following every reasonable research path with their own R&D investment because they want to maximize profit.

So every single penny that people donate for medical research one one penny that the company doing the research will not have to invest themselves and so it will go into their profits instead of being spent on R&D. Literally every penny donated for medical research is a penny in the pockets of a megabillion dollar company.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and was responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2015. Globally, nearly 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer.

In 2015, an estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes. Another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose in 2012

1.0 million [830,000–1,200,000] people died of HIV-related illnesses worldwide in 2016

What did Apple do for World Cancer Day?

What did they do for World Diabetes Day?

So, why does World Aids Day get so much attention?

Do you really need an answer for this one???

I was being cynical. I completely agree with you.

IV Drug use has just as high contraction rate as does sex......

Yes, confirming there is a political element to a mostly homosexual disease is prejudice. Okay, sure. Whatever, friend.

Okay, sure. In developed nations, mainly the United States, AIDS is NOT mostly a preventable, lifestyle disease mostly affecting homosexuals and IV drug users (and to some extent, prostitutes/sex workers)?

Yeah, guess I'm 1983...but not really. If I said AIDS can be transmitted by toilet seats and mosquitoes, THAT would be 1983.

Stop being so offended and take some time to think.

We don't need to fundraise for AIDS anymore. AIDS is no big deal. Just ask Scott Wiener. That's why he worked so hard to make it a misdemeanor to knowingly transmit it to someone else, instead of a felony.
No big deal in first world countries, over 1 million people die of aids in Africa every year, and over 12 million children have been orphaned because of it.

Even nowadays AIDS is preventable, manageable, but not treatable yet. We can do better my friend

Dirty needles, also.

And how do you explain breast cancer awareness month? It gets a whole month! Must be because it's a women disease according to your logic.. another favored 'political group' of Apple and other left of center companies.

I agree with you. Worldwide there is a problem. I was speaking specifically about the US. The main problem I have is that people in the US should know better. We should continue looking for new ways to treat HIV but it shouldn't be an excuse for people here in the US to behave badly and continue practicing unsafe sex using HIV treatments as a crutch. Much better to prevent rather than treat.

Tell that to my male friend who just finished his round of chemo for breast cancer...

who is the guy who picks what causes Apple will spend money on, Timmy ?

since he keeps telling us how inclusive we need to be,
he should have all the Apple employees vote on what causes to pick

the majority of Apple employees may want to support very different causes then Tim does

so you don't like when someone post something that you might find offensive so you are begging macrumors to turn this site into an eco chamber and a safe space ? crayons and puppies ?

Macrumors editors should ask you if you agree with an article and you will tell them if it is a safe topic to discuss ?

You may want to start a reddit group about Apple. then you will be in charge of telling
everyone what to post, what no to post etc. You can ban people, report people, censure them etc.
Exactly what twitter, google and Facebook are doing but you will be finally in charge !

Typically, there will be a committee in charge of charitable donations. Subject to Board approval.
