I really, really hope Apple comes through with some great on this one. I need something somewhat cheap (<$600 for sure), not too huge (10" is pushing it, 11" is right out... 7-9" would be about right), can access the existing App Store apps, has an at least somewhat decent version of iWork, and can use a BT keyboard.

Ideally, I would like to replace my netbook (running 10.5) with a tablet, and my iPod touch with a shuffle... this has the potential to be great, but it might just be "pretty good" depending on the direction Apple goes with it.

EDIT: I would prefer a plastic, iPhone like enclosure, personally... mainly for price reasons. Aluminum machines from Apple tend to be 'spensive.

They were said to demo it this month with shipping it from March... What happened? I suppose, other tablets happened.

And the iSlate goes back to the drawing board...

Apple's not going to wait for a million tablets to be built before demoing a product. They already have manufacturing samples and prototypes, as others have mentioned, built and will use for the demo.

Reuters reports on information from Apple's supply chain indicating that touchscreens for the company's long-rumored tablet device are in manufacturing and that production of the device's casing, which is reportedly aluminum, will begin next month.

I'll wait for the plastic casing with hairline cracks :D

Good to see Apple's misinformation machine is working at full-steam... or is it?

AppleTV Mobile: Any Media, Any Time, Any Where (NOW WITH APPS!!!)

Wait a second... Apple shipping a tablet in Q2 this year? I had't even heard they were thinking about making one. Did I miss something? :p

Is it me or is Apple's tablet unveiling starting to feel more anti-climactic amidst all the recent tablet announcements at CES?

Don't get me wrong though, I haven't a doubt that the islate will be the best of the breed and offer something game changing from the rest of the pack, but it just feels like we need to get on with Apple's show already.

Uh, although the macrumors community is important, and please don't misunderstand me, all of us here, and YOU, ARE REALLY REALLY important... However, consider how the mass of tablet-buying consumers out there might have a different perspective on how all of this is playing out.

Again, YOU ARE IMPORTANT.

And, OUR OPINIONS MATTER!

So, just to review, our perspectives and opinions here on this board ARE IMPORTANT.

VERY important. *

* Not too awfully important. Actually, probably not important at all. Kind of meaningless, really.

I'll get excited when I see what this thing actually is, and determine whether or not it will be of any use to me.

I'm amazed at the number of posts in these threads by people with their credit cards at the ready, when for all we know this product might not fulfill any of their needs whatsoever.

I love Apple, but everything they make is not suited to everyone. Different people have different needs after all.

GUILTY.

Screen going to be Chameleon ?

been reading Engadget a Minute ago found the following:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/pixelqi-screens-to-be-used-by-major-manufacturer-in-2010/

It shows off a LCD Screen that u can Turn off, than being an E-Inkisch experience by a Firm called Pixel Qi.

And there is a tiny interesting bit:

Quote: "within the year we will see a manufacturer that "everyone is familiar with" announcing a device that uses the technology."

Put this in the :apple:Mill.... Rumors on!

Tablet/iSlate to have keyboard?

I was going through all the recent patent applications by Apple and I came across a tablet/laptop hybrid device where the keyboard flips around over and behind the laptop in what is referred to as 'easel' mode. Could this be the iSlate? Details of the GUI are also included showing a 'context' and 'mode' sensitive interface that changes depending if the device is being used in 'laptop' or 'tablet' or 'easel' mode. The keyboard faces the back of the unit when in tablet mode and therefore must have some sort of automatic keyboard lock that kicks in when the touch display is being used in tablet mode.

They probably could figure out a way to use an Aluminum case without ruining the reception. The new iMacs have an all Aluminum body this time (as opposed to the Aluminum front and plastic back) yet have great wifi and bluetooth reception. How? They put the antennas right behind the plastic Apple on the back of the computer. They'll do something clever. And I agree with the other poster, the Aluminum iPhone back was better. They should make it a curved Aluminum back.

I feel like Cartman waiting for the Wii to go on sale!

"Come onnnnn... Come onnnnn..."

:) Can't wait to see the reality of what's to come! At least there was nothing at CES so earth shattering that Apple shouldn't be able to outshine.

I could not agree more... All the reports I have read so far from CES have not generated any excitement... Well: it is all good for our preferred Tech Brand...

My dream for an Apple Tablet:
- Bring the device in a meeting room, take notes (stylus?), create pies manually and being able to send them immediately by email following the meeting
- A Tabletversion of IWORK would be nice
- Take the device out for lunch and play a couple of games, browse the internet, watch a movie...
- Stop the movies, read a magazine or newspaper...

Go Green, save trees, buy a tablet!

But is two months enough time to get all the FCC filings, etc. taken care of? I can't remember the exact timeframe, but the iPhone was announced several months before it actually went on sale so that the "surprise" wouldn't be ruined by someone posting the FCC paperwork ahead of launch.

Of course, it is possible that the rumored tablet will not have a cell chip, making this a moot point.

I'd rather the new device simply tethered to your iPhone wirelessly for network access when wifi was not available.

Obviously you'd need an iPhone to take advantage of this. But who's not got one of those?

Steve ... if this is another of those deliberate leeks used to test consumers reaction to assist you to decide between aluminum and plastic - I vote aluminum! I trust Apple has found a way around the antenna issue.

Quick, someone spread this rumor, and see how the Apple-wannabe knockoff makers announce their products:

Apple table is actually made of diamonds and precious metals. Even the circuit board solders are made with silver.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

I hope it will be at least 10" preferably 11". I want to be able to take notes/write on it.

It would be kinda nice to have this hybrid functionality but it would have to be ultra thin otherwise it would be unappleish if u know what i mean. They are all about slick industrial design, this looks more like a PC kind of concept.

Apologies for my quibble then. I thought Steve Jobs was subscribed to this thread. :p
