why didn't they slap and apple logo on it and charge $500 more?

The Thunderbolt Display might have made it clear to them they could not charge those premiums. I expect it took until this year to finally clear the original production run.

Does it mean that apple won't release any display themselves?

Seems to be a strong sign they won't. They could have sold a new 4K/5K monitor for years now with the Mac Pro and iMac and they have not bothered. Why change now?

Major miss by Apple. They tout the 5K screen on the iMac and the effort and technology that went into building it. Yet totally abandon an in-house solution for notebooks, which is the vast majority of the Mac business. It makes zero sense to me

I think Apple realizes they can't charge a premium for a display that only offers cosmetic / branding differences. I am of the opinion that the Thunderbolt Display was a major failure and soured them on staying in the market.

The only option I see is this rumored "5K+GPU display" would be designed not just for new TB3 Macs, but also older TB2 macs. It could have a "hydra-head" cable end with one USB-C/TB3 connector for new Macs and two Mini-DisplayPort/TB2 connectors for old Macs.

What's the refresh rate on the 5k display? Because Thunderbolt 3's DisplayPort is limited to DP 1.2, which doesn't have the bandwidth to drive a 5k display at 60Hz.

The iMac is native 60Hz thanks to it's custom Timing Controller.

TB3 can support MST 60Hz over a single cable (using two 30Hz DP 1.2 channels) so the LG monitor should also be 60Hz.

Don't bet on it. Apple wouldn't be pitching another company's product only to release their own. I doubt very much we'll see another Apple Display.

When the current Mac Pro came out one of its big selling points was the ability to power a 4K display. Apple began quietly promoting a 4K Sharp monitor online and in store to go along with it, while still selling the Thunderbolt Display. I wouldn't count Apple out of the monitor game just yet.

Seems to me like Apple is very much "focusing" on what's more important for the company. Everyone on MR accuses Apple of lacking "focus" now, right?

Well you tell me what makes more sense for Apples engineers to spend their limited focus on. Universal displays that anyone else can make just as good, or entire computer systems that have integrated displays? I know which one I would pick if I were Apples management.

Which is why Apple partnered with LG, and basically has one display with Apples seal of approval for those that want an external display with their MBP or MP. Apple doesn't need to manufacture their own for such a low volume product.
FOCUS?????!?!?!?!

WHAT DO THEY DO ALLLLLLL DAY?!?!? THEY HAVE A MILLION EMPLOYEES AND ALL THEY COME OUT WITH A PEICE OF CRAP MACBOOK PRO????? What, couldn't spare a few guys to make a display?

I'm sorry, but its time for the Apple fan base to wake up and realize Apple has become a joke and even Microsoft is making better stuff. Did you see that new Studio Surface desktop. My god, it blew me away! Microsoft does not have anywhere near the talent that Apple has and look what they have produced. All I've can do is make things thin and dick around with the keyboard. After seeing the event today it is clear Tim Cook should be fired. The only focus at Apple is the iPhone and even that is crap now. Like the half baked camera. Apple has run out of ideas. They make the same old boring stuff time and time again. It's nice that people have an updated MacBook Pro...but I doubt it was what people hoped for based on comments around here.

Apple products are overpriced, boring, and uninspired. It is that simple.

Indeed, I think it's fugly. The LG 27" 4K ultra-slim (27UD68-W @ $400 or 27UD88-W with USB-C @ $500) with thin profile, thin bezels, and a white back is much more attractive.

Apple buys this model dirt cheap from LG, slaps some Apple marketing lingo around it, makes owners of the new MacBook believe they needs this and voila ... money in the bank

Don't you love it being an Apple user/consumer?

I wonder why they say Apple only on the 5k display. The HP ZBook Studio G3 that I'm evaluating has 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports on it. Maybe I'll have to buy one for "reasons" to test it.

I hate the look of it. Is the LG logo on the front a glue-on? I hate the plastic-y back and stand, I hate the big forehead bezel. The enclosure just looks cheap to me.

Ugh! I've tried to "keep the faith" with Apple this far... Like many people, I've been less than thrilled with some of the recent design decisions and the focus on wearables, tablets, etc. instead of the core product that built the company; computers.

And truthfully? I'm still happy with my iPhone. I bought the new 7 Plus and it's a nice, incremental improvement from the 6s, which was a good incremental bump from the 6, and so on .... I don't think you necessarily need to keep radically changing a smartphone once you have the formula down. Apple got this right under Steve Jobs and they've been wise not to screw it up, IMO. You can argue individual points like the quality of its camera, but that means little. Most of us who are that serious about photography still use a real SLR anyway. The phone just needs a serviceable camera, and anything over and above that is "cake".

BUT, today's announcements? There's no sugar-coating it. This was a FAILURE. Apple's waited so long to refresh their computing line, practically everything in it is on a "Do not buy" list on web sites making recommendations. Plus, being the 25th. anniversary of the Apple portable, you'd think they'd really go all out with something impressive in that category today. But no! Microsoft stole Apple's thunder yesterday with that Surface Studio all-in-one. That "Dial" device they've got that lets you sit it on the display screen to manipulate objects and turn them and everything else? That's a message to Apple, saying "Hey... since you don't care about your creative pros anymore -- come see what we've got to offer them!"

Apple needed to come out swinging, and they just stood there with a proverbial finger up their rear end, trying to remind us how cool their original products were 25 years ago and how world-changing it would be to have a slightly thinner, lighter Macbook Pro with all the function keys replaced with a virtual strip that can draw whatever an app tells it to as buttons. (How well do you imagine that will get supported in Boot Camp, BTW?)

Then, they drop the Macbook Air 11" and make it clear they don't care about the 13" model much either (nothing new for that one). Never-mind this is probably Apple's best selling portable of all of them. Let's just tell everybody they'd rather spend more money for an entry level MB Pro, or one of those plain old Macbook 12" underpowered Ultrabooks with only 1 lousy port on it.

Mac Mini gets ZERO attention. Mac Pro workstation gets ZERO attention. WTF!?

I'm sure that's what Motorola's CEO Ed Zander thought while he was on stage with Steve Jobs introducing the Mototola Rokr....

That isn't an accurate comparison. Apple didn't have a phone then and they sure didn't recently stop making one. Apple had been making displays since the 80's. They know how to do it, they certainly don't need LG to show them. It's over. They are done. Go home. Do they need to put up a hero on the home page of Apple.com to make it any clearer?

Didn't Apple always get third party displays and basically slap their name on it?

So sad.

Perhaps Apple is waiting to release one with an inductive charging base for new peripherals and iPhone 8 later next year.

Wishful thinking, I guess. Just sad I have to attach my beautiful new mbp to that ugly as sin lg display.

If it performs anything like the thunderbolt 2 LG Cinema 4k monitor that I purchased for my Mac Pro, it will largely disappoint - I sent that LG back after a week. The plastic creaky noises these monitors tend to make speaks to their "quality," but who knows - maybe LG will surprise us all. I for one, am very disappointed Apple chose not to release an Apple branded thunderbolt 3 display. Phil described this as the "ultimate docking station," yet it lacks an standard gigabit ethernet port and would require yet another adapter hanging off the back of the monitor. It was the one item I was really hoping for....big let down.

Why no new iMac no wonder the Apple stock is doing terrible and wasted their time once again to have huge convention over just a MacBook. When will Tim Cook be replaced with someone who's innovative.

Probably till the Timmy could no longer squeeze any money with the visions left by Steve. Then, the boards see him of no value – out you go... cross your fingers!
[doublepost=1477633242][/doublepost]
Make you wonder what all the design teams are up to at Apple then?

Apple Car? Wait.... seems like that Tim's vision ain't going anyway with their secret car program

Seems like really good products. Having a pro device on the go, then being able to dock it in at home simply by connecting one cable and having charging, a 5K display, and plenty of USB to spare is absolutely incredible.

Honestly, the MacBook Pro would be amazing if they'd just put a better GPU in it and asked USB-C to deliver a little more power. They could've done so much more with the max power allowed over USB-C, which is 100W. It truly is a great shame.

That's what everyone does. There are only a few companies making the actual panels. Apple typically designed the interface boards, enclosure, and other internals.

Yes however if you buy a new MacBook Pro and this display, you dock your mac to the screen and you have 6 spare USB-C
Ports free.
I don't own any USB-C cables/peripherals.
I would need to get another dongle/box to offer Gigabit Ethernet, SD card reader, old thunderbolt ports, USB-A connectors.
Why aren't they providing some of these directly in the monitor?

This thing is FUGLY. The stand and thickness make it look like an LCD from 2011. No wonder Apple didn't show a full image of it during the event. I'm surprised they would even admit to "working with" LG on this.

Wait until the iMac and Mac Pro are refreshed (hopefully Q1 or Q2 2017). Apple will announce a Retina 5K then.

Can anyone offer an informed opinion or knowledge about whether it's technically possible to use a 2-port Thunderbolt 2 to 1-port Thunderbolt 3 adaptor to connect an older Mac to this 5K UltraFine display?
I know it isn't practically possible right now, since such an adaptor doesn't exist, but would it be technically possible to make one?

.

Looking at how close all those usb-c ports are a plug in stand alone GPU comes to mind. Plug the little cube/rock (or whatever) in the back of the monitor and connect the cable to your laptop.

We all know they aren't going to release this kind of functionality for our older devices, but something to entice you to buy a new laptop.
