They partner with Nvidia... to include groundbreaking new technique...?? Everyday or so there are new optimizations and scientific papers published... You do not have to work with Nvidia to implement them... but in this case it's being added to Tensor-LLM, so software, and the Nvidia mention an "Apple benchmark" that shows 2.7x improvement... The rest of the post is explaining how this is influenced by many factors... So it is nice to see Apple contributing once in a while when other companies have researched and implemented hundreds of ways to improve AI in general.
They have almost no knowledge of AI, run a invisible cloud, local AI is not so local.. and the M socs are nowhere close to what even an average GPU or more specialized NPU...
For instance the GPU from the most expensive MacPro, 15000 euros... And a 4070 ti beats it by 100% in some benchmarks. Which aren't easy to do... it must be done using the same benchmark, and to be fair, not on highly optimized Apple only apps... For the CPU almost no number are available.
So now, they are trapped.. Especially with a big all in one piece SOC... That will not scale much more. So they'd need a completely new architecture, not their specialty really...
Apple do not make GPUS, they are in a soc, it's called an IGPU.. GPU are extremely complex, Apple has bought a company at some point to have a decent mobile GPU. They do not have the knowledge or the skills, nor the people to make anything close to Intel AMD or Nvidia, and it won't happen but one of the only other company with the know how is Microsoft, then maybe some Chinese company. And Nvidia drivers, numbers are not official, has more lines of code (not the best metric, but still a good indication) than MacOs... which in the latest versions has been removing support for numerous hardware standard and it's a platform where everything is to be bought from Apple... Biometrics, Magick thingy only, displays... Well without BetterDisplay you would need to buy one of their over overpriced screens.
They know the situation is not at their advantage, and Apple cannot operate when they have competition (in the 80s, until today... It's always been true), so they lock everything even more... And have no problem making 15 apps not removable... The app tray is half of their, useless for many, apps taking space. And they fight any decision about fair competition with ludicrous argumentation. It's sad, à while back they made a press release to complain about Spotify, "Apple made them" to summarize... Yeeeees Apple made Spotify, they weren't reluctant at all about a streaming service, because of Money, that is all they are after :/ the current Privacy narrative, and sorry, do not involve human rights when the manipulations and low level marketing are so obvious.
Euh about AMD is a good partner, and the particularly hypocritical names that is given to Nvidia, ngreedia... Let's call Apple, Applier for their proverbial honesty... Microsoft never had a bad relationship with Nvidia, not unrelated to Microsoft being a major actor in gaming forever, with Directx. AMD has been struggling very often, Microsoft designed the 360 GPU, and this design was refined for a long time, and they are probably cheaper.. This allowed AMD to build Socs, cpu and relatively powerful gpu...
What did Nvidia asked regarding MacOs? Companies writting drivers or security software or in fact for a lot of reasons, have access for decades to the Windows source code (and the driver sdk is just excelent)... Apple blocked access to their simple os, to get some of the Nvidia implementation details... No one needs Apple, except Google, to the contrary, Apple needs cloud infrastructures, GPT, etc. Or they need Samsung, so it's very funny to see they got a 2 years and a half old screen for the iPhone 16, fast charge is... 4 years late... but they have the intelligence... Not at all available for,2 years even on their devices.
Either they start acting like a honest company, or it isnunavoilable, the masquerade will not end well...
About: Your ranting sounds like how Apple users used to rant about Windows, but ironically Windows has learned and borrowed from Apple and those rants no longer really apply. How many times have we heard about Blue Screens of Death lately? Nowhere near what we used to hear about 20 years ago.
I do not see what Windows ever learned from Apple... They are not comparable.. Windows is not a unix clone so technically, there is nothing in common between NT and Nexstep, and before... Microsoft sold software, not the hardware, and they did what they have always done: develop software for all the major platforms... In the early 80s they were one of many companies... and they always have been facing merciless competition... they even want it, it's pushing them to always innovate and improve. Blue screens of deaths, are the vast majority of time, caused by a shi** driver, or an actual hardware failure, or Crowdstrike with complete access to kernel, that is going to change. So over the years, Vista was a huge evolution, gpu drivers, sound, part of the network stack, and many other things have been kicked out of the kernel, which also deeply changed in the following years. I run Canary builds... The screen is green not blue... Can't recall when I had one...
history is not fair with them, wondering why... The "they stoooole it aaall from us" that was just Jobs decompensating... Later the "Redmond start your photocopiers" is just the expression of a nevrotic brain, it was not possible to relate this to reality... Then the smartphones... Anyway. Today, there is no reason to compare the two companies, they have nothing in common...
