So, when is Apple opening their own, free university? Complete with all the Apple stuff you could possibly need, and all Apple curriculum.

Honestly, this is an awesome idea! That’d be like winning the golden ticket for many of students!

Free?? It will just get hidden in the tuition fee and will be passed on to student loans or parents paying for tuition. There is no free lunch…

Yeah I can do things on a laptop much better and faster then say an iPad just my opinion.
I used an iPad in the classroom during lectures to transcribe and take notes. Don’t forget the novel UI and utility of the Apple Pencil in the classroom either… you can’t do that on a laptop.

The iPad is also slightly less assuming. For some reason, the iPad was way less “OK dude, put your computer away and listen to the instructor.” It had less of an annoyance factor because of the form factor, with or without the keyboard.

A consistent platform will also encourage and aid student collaboration. It’s really hard to get students together in groups and to be on the same page. One consistent device that everyone (or most) enjoys will help.

Education is more or less turned into a business in countries around the world. Probably the U.S. has the most schools, where this business is particularly flourishing. Actually, everyone who has attended a school might know that.

imo, they should've gave out base model m1 macbook air. easy way to sucker students into the eco system. students who already have laptops and smartphones would probably just sell that ipad away because ipads are not as mobile as smartphones and not as powerful as laptops.

Those are the cheap ones. Private schools can be as high as $70k or more per year.
Agreed. Luckily some of those schools will get you a job where you make enough to pay that off in a couple of years to pay it off, or the company will pick up a large chunk of that after you work there a couple of years.

Nice pessimistic bias you got there. To go ahead and help you put your ignorance to bed in one fell swoop, UNR’s tuition prices increase at a predictable amount each year, published in advance. That would apply with or without a free iPad for one class level at the college.

Sure, Apple so nefariously and cunningly captivating users into platform proliferation and dependence by giving them FREE SH*T could be construed as “no free lunch” when the student purchases their next iPad Air. Or you could do what I believe you see as the equivalent of believing in the tooth fairy to see that a company with plenty of iPads to spare—while new models are likely nearing production—may just want to help educate people and promote technological literacy. Who knows, the gift may even help future generations not be so damn jaded!

As part of the "Digital Wolf Pack initiative," all incoming freshmen that will be attending the university in Fall 2021 will receive an iPad Air, an Apple Pencil, and the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio at no cost.
You mean at no further cost. University raised in-state tuition for 2012-2022 school year by $412 (6.5 percent) and out-of-state tuition by $1,036 (4.7 percent) over 2020-2021 year. With the discount the University is getting from Apple, the "free" products are baked into the tuition increase.

And then they throw in a "free" iPad. Did textbooks on iPad even ever take off? That's the most useful thing I could think of for them, but I know it flopped at launch.
That entire effort seemed to be started by people who think the high cost of a textbook is just due to the cost of printing.

Before covid I was super opposed to tech handouts in high school and lower (ofc now it makes more sense cause of Zoom). For undergrad, it seems like a better idea. College students need computers, and this gets all the students on a standard platform and eliminates technical roadblocks. But it should be a laptop rather than an iPad.

Simultaneously cheap and WAY overpriced. Ah, the wonders of the American higher education system.
How is $32K over 4 years for something that's going to shape your entire future career overpriced? Esp when you get ultra cheap loans to cover it. Depending on the university and your aptitude, you also get financial aid and scholarships. You just might not get that stuff if you're claimed as a dependent by parents who make too much money, but then they can afford to pay for you; it's still worth.

The iPad is a great note taking device and most college work is done through online platforms these days so the power isn’t really an issue (depending on what you study of course). Professors are also more accepting of iPads vs open laptops during lecture. As someone who graduated recently if I didn’t need to do programming I could have finished college with just my iPad, especially given the multitasking upgrades that came with ios 11.

So much cynicism…I would have loved to have had an iPad and Apple Pencil throughout college and my graduate education. I ripped several backpacks lugging around heavy textbooks. My learning experience today is greatly improved with the iPad pro. Unlimited textbooks, PDFs, notebooks, and more all in one electronic device.
