Apple this week began teasing some kind of upcoming Apple TV+ surprise that's set to happen on January 4 and January 5, telling customers to "stay tuned" and "save the date" in social media posts.

Apple's images have a tagline that says "See for yourself," but it isn't clear what Apple has planned. Some users on Reddit have speculated that Apple might be planning to launch a promotion that gives people free access to Apple TV+ for a two-day period, though others believe that it could be a preview for upcoming 2025 TV shows.

January 4 and January 5 fall on a weekend, and the "see for yourself" wording does seem to suggest that a free watching period could be a possibility. Apple may share additional information in the days leading up to the "event" that gives us more insight.

Apple has never done a free all-you-can-watch Apple TV+ event, but it does offer free trials for new subscribers and it provides the first episodes of some shows so that potential customers can get a preview before choosing to subscribe.

Apple TV+ is priced at $9.99 per month, and up to six members of a Family Sharing group are able to watch content at that price point.

Is the "surprise" that they're actually going to have good shows besides Ted Lasso (and maybe Severance)? Because that would be a huge shock for sure. :p
This is a shockingly bad take.

Apple TV obviously has the smallest catalogue of all the streamers, but it has by far and away the highest average quality. (From a UK perspective here, so can’t vouch for HBO Max)

They could do something more akin to a traditional TV channel... just stream a sequential marathon of all their content thus far for free in a 48 hour period.

Wow - I just went and looked up how much content there is on Apple TV+ and it's a lot more than I would have guessed. 263 titles between their shows and movies. So my idea of just a marathon stream of it all wouldn't work since at an extremely conservative and definitely under by more than half estimate is over 400 hours of content.

Apple (and every other streaming service) really needs to figure out how to get people to actually discover their content.

You may not like anything else, and that’s sad, but there are in fact many good (based on awards and popularity) shows on Apple TV+.

Besides what you mentioned, I personally also like:
  • Slow Horses (best spy show in a long time).
  • Shrinking (from the writer/creator of two other amazing shows, Ted Lasso and Scrubs)
  • Lessons In Chemistry (just go watch it).
  • Sugar (modern noir who-done-it, with an amazing philosophical twist/reframing.
  • Franklin (love me some historical drama, as long as it’s heavy on the history, light on the stupid drama)
  • Silo (Rebecca Ferguson, ‘nought said).
  • Masters of the Air (If you love WWII history or aircraft).
  • For All Man Kind (the middle season almost kept me from continuing to watch, but I’m glad I did).
  • Palm Royal (comedy, great representation of a time and place).
  • Foundation (Great if you don’t need your scifi space shows to have space battles)
  • If, like me, you can’t get enough Si-Fi (even if it’s not award winning), Dark Matter and See make it as honorable mentions.
To say NOTHING of the half dozen great movies I’ve watched, and another half dozen that were “entertaining” or “good romps”.

For all man kind, Silo, Shrinking, Slow Horses, Bad Monkey, Dark Mater, Lessons in Chemistry, Monarch, and Sugar are all amazing.
Solid list!
As usual, personal tastes come into play… Monarch left me disappointed and Sugar was slow as heck but very very intriguing (binged it after all anyways).

However, I think people could really give a try to:
- For All Mankind: have to manage to settle after the first two or three episodes. But goodness, this was a blast.
- Slow Horses: same but only season one. One of the best espionage series I have ever watched.
- SILO: this one hooked from the very first minute of the very first episode of the very first season.

Those three are different enough and span quite the different tastes. Could watch them once again.

Taking a solid note there on Masters of the Air and Foundation for this holiday season. Thanks!

(based on awards and popularity)

What movies or shows people like is personal opinion and I'd never suggest you (or anyone) who finds value in AppleTV+ shouldn't. If it brings you joy to watch, more power to you! But appealing to "awards and popularity" as a defining reason to like ATV+ is laugh-out-loud funny.

All Apple needs is a JD Power "Initial Product TV Show Quality" award on their mantle to really drive their shameless pay-to-play award whoring to its natural conclusion.
