Confirming earlier reports suggesting the long-rumored Apple television set is taking a backseat to other Apple projects, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today told investors that he does not expect Apple to produce a television set until 2015 or 2016.

Kuo does believe, however, that Apple may launch a new version of the existing Apple TV set top box with the same A7 processor found in the iPhone 5s and Apple's newest iPads in 2014.
We expect Apple to launch a new version of the Apple TV with an A7 processor in 2014, and we forecast 2014 shipments to total 8.2mn units. Shipment growth will be limited unless Apple is able to integrate more TV content, services and its App Store, in our view.
According to Kuo, the cost of launching a supply chain for television set production is a major obstacle for Apple's television set plans, as is the company's continued struggle with procuring additional content deals. Kuo believes that integrating TV content, an App Store, and other services are key to skyrocketing the Apple TV and a subsequent television set from a hobby to a viable product.
We believe the slowdown in Apple TV shipments suggests Apple faces challenges in integrating TV content and services. If Apple wants to launch iTV, the challenges of integrating content and service are more difficult considering the different TV content ecosystems (e.g. cable operators) in various countries. Moreover, establishing an iTV supply chain is very costly. Thus we believe iTV launch will be delayed to end-2015 or early 2016 at the earliest.
There was some speculation that Apple could release an updated Apple TV product during the company's recent iPad event, but according to TechCrunch's MG Siegler, Apple is not yet ready to debut its revamped hardware, which could include upgrades like Siri integration or motion control, so a 2014 timeline makes sense.

Apple has also thus far been unable to secure the deals with content providers and cable companies that are necessary for it to revolutionize the television experience, but it remains in ongoing negotiations with multiple companies including Time Warner.

Wouldn't the A7 be a bit overkill for the AppleTV box? If Apple wants more performance out of it, just go to the dual core A5 since the iPad 2 is still in production.

All they need to do is make the Apple TV to where you can play iOS games with a controller and they'd basically slaughter the competition.

Not if they finally add an SDK (e.g. for games, would work great with Bluetooth controllers, the foundations are there in iOS7).

I still don't the get need for a TV set from Apple, however. All the logic is in the little box and services in the cloud from Apple or third parties, just update the current Apple TV box.

What would be unique about an Apple TV screen compared to other brands? No need for that.

If negotiations with content providers are the culprit, how can they even try to predict when Apple will reach a satisfying agreement?

Not surprised.

First I think a proper HDTV from Apple needs to be about content more than some other whizzbang feature they can cook up (no pun intended). Also Apple doesn't even need to bother with 1080p. Ultra HD is the bare minimum.

Second if the A7 is going into an Apple TV then the only legit reason for that is potentially opening up the ability to run apps directly on the Apple TV.

The next ATV should have an A7. Combine that with HDMI 2.0 and 802.11ac - and you could drive 4k content. Apple would leapfrog the streaming video competition, which would ensure that it sold even if they did nothing else.

Of course, a big jump in processing power would likely come with a new interface, an app-store, and some version of a game controller...

Just give us an A7 + some storage + 802.11ac + an App Store and we'll be happy, Apple :)

EDIT: All I want is a native Plex app, sadly.

EDITx2: Actually, steal some ideas from Xbox One. HDMI-in for your cable box to control your cable, whilst also allowing voice controls via Siri.

EDITx3: Oh, and a camera for FaceTiming!

Oh yes almost forgot.

iBeacon support. That way when I sprinkle Apple TV throughout my home they also function nicely as beacons in the home that I can use to trigger tasks via my iWatch.

With this delay I think we can almost certainly confirm the display will be a 4k OLED otherwise the set would be outdated even before release. The real issue is price, Apple charge a premium usually double i not triple that of competitors for its products but with a TV this would price them straight out of the market doomed to go the way of Pioneer.

The tv sales industry is a money pitt which loses money like nothing else. Apple will need to price the same as its cheaper made counterparts while maintaining its quality while taking into account the top budget for you average consumer is less that £1000 yet they require a product that is worth far more. This is just how the market is and even Apple can't change that.

After all the years of speculation I am believing less and less that there will ever be an actual Apple TV Set. Cable and satellite providers had so much time by now to prepare for the attack from Apple, I am sure they are prepared now. The Samsungs in the TV production business had their thinking caps on 24/7, so I am sure they did their homework.
Once we get confirmation that such a product will never see the light of day it would be nice to know what Steve Jobs had on his mind about this.
I hope that they keep Apple TV going and keep improving it.

Isn't it surprising that we don't already have an android OS tv box from google? All they need to do is create some solid hardware to run android, and boom you have the entire google app ecosystem, all your contacts, sms, skype, calendars, a whole new world of gaming options, and whatever content deals Google can put together with netflix, hulu, hbo, network (espn) apps etc.

What are the sticking points?
Control device? -my vote is for a wand to point and click on the screen
Content deals? -There's already a solid amount of content available
Bandwidth? -The infrastructure would happen in response to demand

I don't get it.

I'm very happy with my AppleTV 2. And I'm sure when Apple does come out with the much rumored AppleTV it will exceed our expectations.

If negotiations with content providers are the culprit, how can they even try to predict when Apple will reach a satisfying agreement?

They can't. Which is why this rumor mill comes around four times a year, always pushing the date back.

Content is independent of hardware anyway. Ideally Apple would want a deal that allows for the maximum variety in how you use the content so that 'Apple TV' means how you want, where you want. Get it by your rules, not some cable company.
