Apple will remove the ability to enter and monitor blood glucose data in its Health app because of reported issues with measurement from users in the UK and Australia, reports CNET.

Currently, the app allows users to manually enter view blood glucose values in mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or mmol/L (millimoles per liter). However, Apple notes that the Health app has an issue with devices that display mmol/L, as those values cannot be entered or displayed in the Heath app.

An Apple support page published on the matter states that the company will soon release a software updated that will temporarily remove the ability and states that data will not be deleted:
If you have previously entered values manually in the Health app, you'll no longer see this data in the Health app after the update. However, your data won't be deleted, and other apps with permission to read health data will still have access to blood glucose values that you previously entered.

Third-party apps will continue to be able to support both units of measurement and can continue to use HealthKit APIs to store blood glucose data.
It is unknown if a fix will come Apple's forthcoming iOS 8.1 software update or through a potential iOS 8.0.3 update. Before the public launch of iOS 8, Apple confirmed that it had discovered a "bug" in HealthKit and pulled HealthKit-related apps from the App Store. Apple eventually released iOS 8.0.1 with fixes for HealthKit, and once again allowed HealthKit-enabled apps to be on the App Store.

how is it done?

There no mention on the physical method of capturing the data... its the watch with the sensors?... without a blood sample?

How are people capturing the data anyway? As of right now Healthkit is borderline useless as it doesn't even show any data at all half the time nor properly sync with other apps like it's supposed to.

No! What about my issues! Look at it you can see very very clearly when iOS 8.0.2 came out

Diabetics use meters that break the skin and read blood glucose levels. That data is sent to the iPhone.

nope. Its same in UK and we use miles.

Is it the case that the health app is reading 'miles' from the running/walking app that you are using? Perhaps you have setup 'miles' in the app you are using to read your walking/running distance.... just a thought...

Not a single glucose monitor supports healthkit yet

iOS 8 has built-in support for glucose monitors that uses the standard Bluetooth LE glucose profile. e.g. Panasonic GT-1830 or iHealth GB5L.

You can also manually enter glucose readings via the Health app.

The treatment required for 25mmol/L and 25mg/dL glucose levels is exactly the opposite. Both are an emergency situation already – and dosing insulin intended for 25mmol/L to someone with 25mL/dL would kill a type 1 diabetic.

None of those monitors are sold in the UK, therefore getting strips for those on the national health service will be nothin impossible.

Far as I'm concerned, healthkit is a flop

The summary says the issue is with manually entered data. You use a normal meter and just type in the results.

I think you misread the summary. The issue is with the app not manually entered data. The app has issues with mmol/L.

AFAIK all blood glucose data has to be entered manually. I don't know of any meter that integrates with Healthkit.

edit: retroneo mentions there are a couple of meters that have iOS8 support. Not sure how widely available they are.

Yea but, if you don't sensationalise the issue... then the MR treadmill will come to a halt....;)

Normally I would agree with you but this post has nothing sensational in it. It rather dryly explains why Apple removed BG tracking. If anything it reads more as a PSA.

Lol! No I can walk steps

Do you have any third party apps set up to feed data to the Health app for workouts and/or activity? Make sure they're up to date. AFAIK, walk and run data only come in from workouts in third party apps.

I have MapMyRide, Lark and WW Mobile connected to the Health App, and it's recording my walk and run data just fine.
