Honest question:
Are we actually sure, that this Low-End Macbook will run a full macOS? Is there a source for that?
Or are we just inferring that from the "Macbook" name?

So much energy put into the consumer side - which I fully understand the math. Still, as what now feels like a dinosaur of a creative pro that cut his teeth on PowerMacs, it’s kind of sad watching Apple’s pro ambitions wither. Was an epic run - and why Apple is where it is today: the creative pros. So wild to think of 1990s Apple vs today’s Apple. Almost unrecognizable. Not actually complaining - just feeling sentimental on this Wednesday. Apparently. 😁

I think this may have been a very low-cost MacBook running a stripped-down version of MacOS 18. But that was dropped in favor of a somewhat more expensive MacBook running the A18 Pro SoC with 16 GB of RAM instead.

The Mac Studio Max and Ultra, the M4 Pro/Max Mac Book Pro, soon to be M5, and the M4 Pro mini is withering? 2013-2019 was withering…this is revitalization. if you’re still missing the 2006-2012 Mac Pro it’s time to say a final eulogy and move on. I have a 2008 sitting in a box in my closet and I have zero practical use for it at this point. It was big, heavy, consumed a ton of power and heated up a room to boot. I get how there are still edge cases for the Mac Pro now, but that giant box is done and it’s not ever going to have the same glory it did in 2010.

Well it’s an excellent way to produce a lower cost entry in the US to help boost its US market

Why would Apple create another fork of macOS to maintain an update on an annual basis? Everyone here in this thread really needs to take a breath and just wait until it’s released. You’re all giving your anxiety for no good reason.

As an A series chip would already be a step down from what is currently available, I doubt it will be another step down by using an older generation.
It may be a step down from M-series, but I could see them slightly clocking up the A-series in a MacBook chassis such that the single core speed of the A19 matches single core of the M5 (afaik their core architectures are the same). You'd basically just have half the cores, graphics, and memory specs, but most basic web or otherwise single/dual core workloads could potentially be just as fast as on the M5... which is to say, world-beating levels of snappy. If they can work in even just 12GB of RAM, at the right price, it could end up being hugely popular.

The only thing I am worried about is that they are going to use the A chips as an excuse to close down macOS for the cheaper models and eventually for all macOS. MacOs is probably a thorn in Tims side.

I don't think you need to worry about that. I haven't seen that posted anywhere as something Apple was testing. It seems to come up on every thread about the low cost macbook, but it seems like it's something that users are speculating might be the case, but without any evidence. It seems like a bad idea with no real upside for Apple, and I doubt they would cripple it like that.

I appreciate your personal opinion and lifestyle advice, but my original question was: Is there a credible source for this part of the rumor?
To be honest, when I first heard that an A-series chip would be in there, I thought of some kind of iPad Hybrid: Macbook chassis, but iPadOS.

Or, just take a MacBook Air & put the same amount/types or ports the MacBook Pro has on it & slash the price. That would seem the most cost effective option for Apple.

If they wanted to do that, they could still use M-series chips. The iPad Pro uses M-series and it's still locked down. The Developer Transition Kit used A-series and it wasn't locked down.

Not saying that they wouldn't produce a cheap locked-down Mac (in which case, time to switch to Linux because the rest of the Macs would soon follow), just that it has nothing to do with the choice of chip.

"The kit was accidentally released on Apple's website earlier this year, but it was quickly pulled after information started leaking out of it."

Color me skeptical. Was the kit accidentally leaked or "accidentally" leaked to generate buzz?

"App store only" is already an option in MacOS - If Apple were inclined to, they just need to remove one checkbox in system settings to enforce it. No new hardware needed.

Did the $329 iPad run a cut down version of iOS?

This Mac is called Mac17,1, was found in macOS code. No reason to believe otherwise.

Now we wait for the inevitable delay after delay. Other than their cash cow iPhones, when DIDNT they delay some new product? I’m still waiting for the new Apple TV.

To delay something there needs to have been an announcement, was there an announcement for an Apple TV?

Interesting idea depending on the price. I don't think it'll be worth it if it's only 150 bucks less than an M4 Air.

It’ll be fun to see people that have thought they’ve needed huge amounts power in their laptops get by just fine with this.
Lol me when I initially got a Macbook Pro with an M2 Pro and traded in for an Air and am doing just fine.

What exactly is the difference between the A-series and M-series of chips? It'd be a lot easier for Apple if they just had a single line of chips, right? I'm under the impression they have the same op-codes so... is it just a differing core-count? or do they run at different frequencies? Different amounts of cache/registers?
