Let's all spell it together.

EXCLUSIVITY.

AT&T had it at one time. Hence, TMobile couldn't have the iPhone, or any other carrier in the United States.

The more you know.....

It's absolutely ridiculous it has taken this long for tmobile to have the iphone in the usa.

True, long term it is a good plan. Though it looks like since the announcement that new phones becoming available on t-mobile have 850/1900 as well as 1700. Looks like it part of their plan to get devices out to t-mobile users that can work on both networks to be ready for this type of change.

Anyway, regardless of the buy out or not, once exclusivity ended it was only a matter of time before Apple added more bands to the iPhone. The qualcomm chip they use now supports all these bands anyway.

myTouch 4G has Band (frequency):850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)

changed the carrier name?

whats not to say someone just changed the carrier name? I don't own an iphone but I did search and its totally possible.

I don't see a reason apple would need to create an iPhone for T-Mobile if the AT&T plan goes through. If it's rejected than maybe thats a reason then to possibly go on T-Mobile.

There is more to this than the carrier tag.

As noted in this thread... adding an extra band opens oter networks besides TM. Also, if purchased, TM cannot flick a switch on all their towers to make them at&t compliant.

Not if they're grandfathered in! AT&T has stated in their proposal papers to the FCC that they're going to honor the T-Mobile plans in contract even if they upgrade phones.

A T-Mobile rep told me the same thing. But he also said this process might take a year - IF it goes through.

iPhone's been on T-Mobile for a while

I have a friend that has had his iPhone 3g on T-Mobile for a year:confused:. He got it unlocked (T-Mobile had to have his phone to do it) and he was on the service! Problems he had with AT&T made it possible.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble... but I don't believe this is a US phone. My iPhone 3gs has been on t-mobile for almost 2 years now... ...because that's the standard carrier in the Netherlands...

The +1 before the phone number definitely lends to the probability that it's intended for foreign use.

I can send a screenshot of both my and my gf's phones that clearly say: T-Mobile 3G on them... :D

No thanks, lol, you can put pics of your girlfriend though, to prove that she is from Netherlands

And the N94 part number denoting an entirely separate model?

For all the T-Mobile users just keep your fingers crossed and hope that the merger doesn't pass. wouldn't it be really nice to finally have an iphone at an affordable rate.

why do people believe this is possible? Apple will not allow one carrier to undersell the other on the SAME DEVICE...just won't happen it's bad for sales...which is why there is no competition between AT&T and Verizon...similar plans on voice text and data...otherwise everyone would play carrier swap every few month to get the best deal...if Tmobile gets the iPhone while still independent from AT&T you better believe you won't get unlimited everything for 70 bucks

They won't. Even if this deal gets approved, T-Mobile will remain a separate company. Everything will remain as it is, except the fact that all revenue will go to AT&T.

this is probably what they were saying over at the Cingular offices at the time of that deal...Tmobile will be independent NOW...once the deal is finalized...no more Tmobile just the Death Star

I hope this is true. A lot of people would go to T-Mobile because of their competitive pricing and that would encourage AT&T and Verizon to lower their prices too. Hell, I would consider switching.

nah Verizon and AT&T would furlough a couple of goons to go and see that Tmobile prices were brought up to their level...there is NO WAY TMobile will be allowed to undersale Verizon and AT&T...NO WAY...Tmobile, Sprint and whoever else you wanna name only has lower rates now because they are starved for new customers, losing old customers to Verizon and AT&T and they DON'T have an iPhone...

"The T-Mobile US network uses different frequencies than AT&T's, requiring different hardware to support."

It surprises me that it would need different hardware. I know that it is possible to jailbreak a AT&T phone to work with T-mobile. so apparently it can be done with software.

The current iPhone can work on T-mobile with gsm/edge/2G only. When they mention different frequencies (UMTS Bands) they are talking about the current iPhone not support the 3G band that T-mobile uses.

I would guess its because outside of the US there's countries with multiple carriers that compete on price/features/plans as well. I don't think Apple will not allow it to happen, I'd say that AT&T won't allow it to happen (assuming the buyout goes through).

Besides, if the iPhone gets the 1700 3G band added, I know theres people here in Canada who will use it on Wind with $35 unlimited everything.

i hope this is true!

i am a 4G contractor right now here in T-mobile and i'll tell you HSPA+ is not as fast as verizon LTE but hey, there is no cap! right now im testing HSPA+ and im getting 4mbps on mytouch.

i hope this merging will not push thru.. or else, at&t will only butcher t-mobile good network..
