Until I played a game on it with the keyboard. OMG. :D I showed one of my friends a few games in an emulator (where keyboard controls are AWESOME), this dude had an iPhone 3G and loved it. And he wanted my phone! XD

I'd love Apple to get someone like Logitech to make a licensed controller to the dock connector. 2 shoulder buttons, 4 face buttons, a d-pad and twin analogue sticks would be perfect.

The iPhone would finally be able to have FPS, action and adventure games. With better hardware than DS/PSP and $10-$15 games, Nintendo and Sony would have some serious competition.

Until then, the touch screen gives us train and bus time killers like Doodle Jump and Angry Birds. Or puzzle games.

The UI doesn't have to change at all. The iphones and ipads already fully support external keyboards. The only change would be that that when the keyboard is open, the soft keyboard doesn't pop up - iOS already works that way when an external keyboard is connected.

Fair enough, still doesn't change the fact that Steve hates keyboards. :p

hmm... moving parts could be a problem. That's what's so great about iphone now. Not a lot of buttons or moving parts to go bad.

Not true. He just dislikes sucky keyboards. Apple sells many USB keyboards and all of its notebooks have keyboards. They key to keyboards is that they shouldn't suck, and they shouldn't impose UI constraints that make the device less usable. The latter would presumably not be an issue given that the UI is already designed in such a way that it does not depend on a hardware keyboard. The question is whether Steve thinks they can make a good keyboard that works well, doesn't unduly effect size/weight/reliability/cost, and that adds value.

I meant phone keyboards.

Someone raised a good point earlier, which is that even the 11.6" MBA did not compromise from a full-sized (letters) keyboard.

If you could make a keyboard small, but still ergonomic, wouldn't it have been in the iPhone from the start? Why the sudden change? I'm sure the first iPhone had prototypes with keyboards coming out left right and centre. Sliding, flipping, flopping, and... sucking.

That said, if someone wants it as an option, great. I do want more options myself, like Blu-ray in Macs. Just trying to be realistic here.

Technology has changed. Components are smaller, meaning that less space/weight is needed for a great screen, great battery, powerful processor, etc. This may mean more space/weight can be dedicated to a great keyboard/sliding mechanism without resulting a behemoth phone. New materials like liquid metal may also result in sturdier sliding mechanisms, etc.

Just a thought. I'm still guessing we don't see a keyboard for at least another couple iterations, if ever.

Simple answer: No

Apple
Believes strongly in the on screen keyboard. All of my friends find the on screen keyboard perfect for us and we send hundreds of texts and emails each day. After using on screen keyboards my friends and me find mobile phone physical keyboards near impossible to use and we type way slower then an on screen keyboard.

I see WAY too many cracked screens - both front and back. They really need to address how fragile these things are...I want my phone to last at least 2 years, and have real concerns w/ durability...

Other than that the iPhone 4 design is awesome...

I have dropped mine a few times:eek::, not even a scratch :), that said, what are people doing with their phones , first this is not a 69 dollar phone so why are you throwing it around like it is. Last time I remember you don't leave your porsche :p in a bad part of town and believe it will be safe just like a yugo .

I don't baby the phone but I don't throw it around and think it will last for ever. My take is people sit on their phone thinking its like a wallet or swing it around like a wii remote. :D

OMG you people are amazing. Did any of you geniuses think for a second that Apple may actually want to branch out with more than one phone model? They're obviously feeling the heat from Android and are trying for a broader market with Verizon and a larger selection of phones. Why is that so hard to understand? WTF do you care if Apple sells a slider and a mini iphone along with the touch screen? I thought everyone here was a high rolling Apple stock tycoon? you should be happy about this.

If you made a drinking game by drinking every time someone typed the name Steve in this thread you'd end up in the emergency room. You guys don't know the man you sound like groupies when you call him Steve.

Your asking people to think, don't be so cruel!:p

While I'm pretty sure this isn't real, there's a part of me that says Apple very well may have some crazy prototypes (good and bad) of all sorts in their labs, I think we'd be nuts to discount it. Kinda like how secretly for many years OS X was living a double life (and maybe even more) in some test labs.

Tell that to those of us with failed home buttons (a big ugly mechanical button on a touchscreen ?) on our months old iPhone 4's

Another sign of Apples declining quality and careless decisions.

it's funny because if they do go through with this (unlikely) i guarantee all the nay sayers will be completely on board with steve - just cause his word is the law.

Not wading through the myriad of comments on this subject so far so I may be repeating what someone already said. But I think Apple is just screwing around with leakers, rumor sites and their competitors that are still trying to desperately out-Apple Apple.

They know that their supply chain will have leaks, so why not just throw some red herrings out there?

Yes, and they won't ever ever be replaced by Apple. I mean, you can't go into an Apple store with your failed home button iPhone 4 and have it replaced. Mean Apple. Oh wait, yeah you can. You could go in, and they'd swap it out for you without a fuss.

Since this isn't a widely reported problem, I don't see what you're complaining about. I mean, if this was a major problem that lots of people were having, it would almost be front-page news with all the sharks in the water just waiting for more Apple-blood. Antenna-gate? They look for ANYTHING to bash the iPhone 4 about: The antenna. The glass. The "death grip". The dropped calls....blah blah blah. You are literally the first person that I've seen so far that's had a bad home button. Not denying that it happens, just saying it can't be that wide-spread.

what's your guys take on there being 3 different versions of the iphone rumor?

I believe the word is one will have a physical keyboard, one will be a mini iphone, and I forgot what the third one was....

All these rumors coming out today about Apple. Could it be that Apple is doing some control leaks to steal some of that thunder from the MWC?

IMO there's no way Apple puts a physical keyboard on the iPhone. That would be going backwards and Apple doesn't go backwards.
