Will the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter work properly under these conditions?:

1. I would be running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 ( Apple Website suggests OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) or above...)
2. It would be for a 2011 iMac ( So that would be a first generation Thunderbolt port)

It would be replacing a dead Ethernet port...

Thanks very much!

The iMac will only run the version of OS X it shipped with or newer. Also, even if it was possible, I don't believe 10.6.8 supports Thunderbolt.

It did ship with Snow Leopard installed, and I do have a couple of thunderbolt ports available

I would say unlikely since "OS X v10.7.4 or later" is listed as a "System Requirement" NOT as a suggestion per the Mac Accessory product page.

Here is a Apple FAQ Support page that also indicates the need for OS v10.7.4 or later and installation of Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 (which also requires OS 10.7.4). If you contacted Apple they would just probably parrot the written System Requirements. Probably the only way to know is to gamble and spend the $29 to try it.

Otherwise, all I would have to do is upgrade to El Capitan 10.11, right?

That should do it, but don't forget the Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1 since your iMac was released before June 2012. Make sure you have a good backup before doing such a large upgrade. Do a little research to make sure you do not have software installed that would conflict with El Capitan.

You could also purchase OS 10.7 or 10.8 redemption codes from Apple for $19.99 each
