These mini app stores can’t really compete with F-Droid’s free and open source apps.
How about APKmirror's ... 🙄

Thats where completely "opening things up" leads.
There's a shocking shortage of FOSS software for iPhone and iPad! I blame the developer fee - FOSS devs are already giving their time for free, but apple also wants $99 out of them for the privilege?
$99 a year for any kind of hobby is pretty cheap.

My biggest fear with these 3rd party app stores is that some countries will use this as an excuse to force their citizens into only being allowed to download apps from "approved" stores, limiting user choices to gov't handpicked apps.

It's true. I'm unbricking my Mac right now.

I was in the shower and came back and poof!

Just like that ..
Mac bricked.

Scary world out there.

You too?

My Mac just went crazy a little while ago while I was working on a paper. It was like "beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep," and then it unexpectedly shut down. Like half of my paper was gone. And I was like, "Hnnnn?" 😕 It devoured my paper. It was a really good paper. And then I had to write it again. And I had to do it fast so it wasn't as good. It's kind of a bummer.

^That!
On all my used computing platforms (even at work!) I and also my employers always heavily preferred FOSS software for use. Just a few examples: 7-Zip, Eclipse, LibreOffice, Notepad++, Firefox, Thunderbird, Jenkins... That's just what I thought of now, there are lots and lots more.
The i(Pad)OS environment really misses a lot of that $free software. The only one I think of right now is Organic Maps, a really $free enormous useful app, that also is completely free of ads and tracking! 👍
It's a real pity, that could be worked over with alternate app stores - but only if Apple does not decide to also "greedily harvest" from $free apps. The situation on the Android side is completely different, there are lots of $free apps, even without ads.

Now awaiting the usual "But you'll get screwed over with that $free software - it's a lot better to pay for that!"-comments flying in... 🤣

Probably some Apple software malfunctioning.

Their software quality is in the gutter.

I'm pretty much done with apps now because most of them would be classified as adware or spyware by the definition of the mid 2000s.

However, I still care for having open access because I want a full fat browser that supports the full fat uBlock Origin. Not to mention, having an up to date browser is pretty much good enough for security purposes most of the time so it's going to be a bit safer to delay updating the operating system for whatever reason.

I don’t agree. For me I should be able to do whatever I want with my phone. Even modify its software, install whatever I want, resale it etc. Apple prevents me from doing it, they are violating my rights as a consumer.
You don't own your phone. You purchase a license to use it until its viability ceases. You are a lessee.

This is what Apple thinks of sideloading the way it's currently implemented on Android. Greed

I didn't even think about "sideloading" for once but you're exactly right! It wouldn't be so bad if the $99 fee was just for app store distribution, but it's charged regardless of your file ever hitting their servers.
I still don’t mind if they increase that fee to $200 or $300 to pay for whatever excuse but stop taking 20% commissions on sales that aren’t on your App Store. It’s so unfair to small devs.

You bought a phone you knew didn't have that as an option but you went ahead and bought it anyway, so nobody is violating anything. Show me the law where your precious "rights" are being violated? I'm over the spoilt brat entitled attitude people spout today. "I want it now" isn't a thing with Apple, so don't keep buying it and give the rest of us a break.

Ah well hold on - that fee is levied against all apps, regardless of how much it ends up selling for. Making that fee higher only increases the barrier to entry to the development scene - outright preventing some people from even trying.

It's almost like this one-size-fits-all approach only hurts the common folk or something. These devs and their $99 annual payments subsidize Spotify, Meta, Netflix et al.

Let me see if I understand what you're trying to say...

Giving someone choices in what phones they can purchase is good.

But giving someone choices of where to get iOS apps is bad.

Is that right?
So help me understand this.

Buying a phone you know won't give you access to alt stores is a good choice.

Then complaining that it doesn't do what you know it can't do is good.

So Apple is bad?

Is that right?
