The Real Question: When will we see apps?

If next week is a beta of the SDK only and June will provide the final, will we have to wait until June for apps? God I hope not.

No matter what, the pessimists will continue to whine about every decision Apple makes regarding the iPhone and iPod touch.

Does this gold bikini make me look fat?

I heard that all iPhone developers will have to pledge their personal fealty to SJ himself, while wearing a Princess Leia outfit.

Damn that Jobs, he's such a control freak!

Maybe we should just wait till Tuesday...there might even be some G5 powerbooks thrown in for the patient.

can't wait to see what really happens next week, just 6 more days left

This sounds reasonable, though I'd suspect that the real deal would be that apps sold through iTunes would be vetted by Apple, and those distributed outside of iTunes are on their own. Meaning they don't have to be free, just not sold through iTunes. I'd be surprised (though not shocked) if Apple attempted to control whether apps are free or not; they'd simply want to impose constraints on apps that they sell.

Ipod Touch Price Drop

I know this is off topic but I just noticed that on Apple's store they have reduced the prices of refurbished ipod touches as follows:

8gb from $249 to $229
and
16gb from $349 to $329

Anyone else think the Ipod Touch price drop will happen at the March 6th event?

sounds good, how about just making a tab in itunes. then you download an app from anywhere and you just drag it into itunes. just like music or video.

this way you can also 'manage' your apps.

I certainly don't claim to understand liability, but I guess this makes sense from a CYA perspective - if they're going to be the store that sells you the software, they want to make sure that it doesn't hose your iPhone. Although, I don't think a brick retailer would be held to that kind of scrutiny.

I will compromise to this level.

It allows the free and open system that has worked so well for computers thrive equally on the iPod, but with Apple paying closer attention to some of the bigger vendors. Reminds me of Claris, etc...

Now, I, a iPhoner, can install what I'd like on there, without anyone telling me I can't because something might possibly be less than ideal.

logic

a developer needs to be able to install his app on a phone to test it. If they can load an app, anyone can. If you need the sdk to install an app as a developer then everyone would download the sdk. If a developer wants to sell the app on their own site I don't see how apple will stop them.

I hope that itunes allows you to download apps. on the itunes mobile store!

lol! I know I know this is the least of ANYONE'S worries, im just wondering what are the chances of it happening

Ignore this good news -- the sky is still falling! Throw out your iPhones and get an "open" Treo or Nokia N95 or else confirm your "fanboy" status for all to see!

Let's try waiting until Thursday to get all the details before jumping off a bridge, shall we?

Hmmm.... I bet On thursday the full blown sdk comes out because apple has a hisory of just surprising people :p

Makes sense. If you want to get paid for your app, Apple checks it out first. After all, they don't want to be held responsible for selling an app through their store if there ends up being something faulty with it. If you don't want to get paid, no checks, but users download at their own discretion. I'd like this.

Maybe you'd like it but Apple would hate it. Geezus kids! They are going to check every piece of software that goes out of itunes. But the free stuff they just won't be as stringent with. But they still have to check the free stuff for anything that might have malicious code that would hurt the iphone.

This seems cool. I probably won't be spending a hell of a lot of money on iPhone apps so it's nice to know that there will be free ones out there. I can't wait to see what comes out.

This would solidify the iphone being the best phone on the planet by a long shot. It would be SO easy to get anything you want for your phone from one site...

Love it!

:apple:

They are going to check every piece of software that goes out of itunes. But the free stuff they just won't be as stringent with. But they still have to check the free stuff for anything that might have malicious code that would hurt the iphone.:

Have you any idea how hard it is to tell whether code is malicious?
  • You can't check the code automatically, that's the halting problem;
  • You can't just "run it and see" because it might behave fine until something triggers it;
  • You can't examine the source code, that's too expensive.
Basically, it can't be done. If it was possible, there wouldn't be computer viruses.

So what about all those int'l customers without an iTunes store!!??

So, it seems that whole problem is going to be getting the apps to customers who don't have an itunes store.

The iPod Touch is sold *everywhere* there's an apple reseller, and we're going to want to install software on it... developers should want to get access to that large market, so it wouldn't make sense to have then sell software through a parallel store (paypal, 2co, etc.).

Maybe they'll announce an International iTunes Software store??
