They should just buy Spotify. Even if it cost them 5x the amount, it would be a good deal. Beats for $3B is a joke. Firstly, you can't buy cool. Secondly, even if you could, Spotify would give Apple more than 5x the amount of cool that Beats would.

I doubt Spotify would be available for a mere $15B.

This one makes me laugh (in a good way) every time I read it!

Now, if they'll just give me Thunderbolt 2 on the 27" iMac...

Glad it gave you a chuckle. :)

I'll settle for USB3 on the Thunderbolt Display.

I bought the Studio Wireless, they are one of the worst pairs I've ever owned. Actually all Beats with Noise Cancellation are horrible, they hum to create silence, so annoying for a developer. Switched to Bose QC 15's - only downside is they are not stylish like the Beats. If they fix the hum I'll buy a pair.

Someone explain why so many people hate this deal on this site? Who cares what apple spends it's money on as long as it keeps making great products.

Allow me to try: I think people are less worried about the deal itself (in terms of dollars) and more worried about what it symbolizes. Apple trying to "buy into cool", instead of invent cool or be cool.

Also, a lot of people also see Beats headphones as trashy (low quality, high priced gimmicks). And Beats Music, as it stands now, is a failure. I think if Apple were to acquire Audio Technica (headphones) and Spotify ( Music service) people would squawk less, even if the numbers were bigger.

The thing that most people forget, though, is that buying Spotify wouldn't actually do anything - Spotify's licensing agreements are not transferable or assignable, so Apple would be buying an empty shell and a few people.

Racism is not disliking one particular african american (Dr. Dre), racism is disliking all people who are african american (or hispanic, jewish, etc). I feel for the most part, 90% or more of Apple fans don't like the beats deal because of the financials and these 2 particular individuals (Iovine and Dre). If the deal brought Will.i.am or Quincy Jones to the Apple Board or the company being acquired was say Bang & Olufsen, I think Apple fans would be applauding for the most part. I hate this hyper fascistic politically correct world the media has spun where if you don't LOVE every single last jewish comedian, russian supermodel or gangster rapper then somehow you're a anti-semetic, xenophobe racist!

LOL this time it's by New York Post.

Next we are going to hear it from THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER !!!!

Each of those images come across as meh, or neutral. Was there supposed to be some sort of glamour or something else that I didnt quite understand?

Exactly, they are supposed to be meh . . . . neutral . . . . just average pop stars, super stars, and average joes wearing headphones.

That's exactly what it's supposed to say. No sarcasm intended . . . . I am dead serious. Everyone from the boardroom to the jailhouse has Beats, and an iPod, and a Macbook . . . the latter not being connected to the internet of course.

There will be some, perhaps many, who will vehemently disagree with what I am inferring, but I have eyes, I have perception, and I am being more honest about it than you are.

Nah.

Apple produces better product, but Beats are in their wheelhouse.

Apple produces a product . . . . that's all. Quality of of it is in the eyes of the consumer. I don't like Beats, but a whole lotta people do.

Again, Apple sees a benefit so it will be bought. HP did partner with Beats back in 2010, and I don't know if it helped much at all, but Maybe Apple is just trying to stymie some unseen potential progress.

I don't know . . . . but I'd never EVER say that I know more than some highly paid Apple CEO, and make bad suggestions like some have.

I'm pretty sure its the Dr. Dre involvement.

it's a free country (for a little longer anyway) so we can dislike who we want but I think you're wrong I know just as many people that find Iovine to be sleazy snake oil salesman - his pull in the music industry has been waning for years as is the Fad'ish popularity of Beats Headphones - they are by very definition the kinda product that's popular 3-5 years and then after embarrassing to own - i think Beats are on the verge of embarrassing to own status already!

Beats head phones are embarrassing to own quite honestly. However, maybe Apple will want them to become better headphones for that premium price.

Neither are Beats.

Why do you guys care so much though? If the products are what you like why does it matter what somebody else says about it?

I just don't understand how a successful company buying another successful company can draw so much hate.

Because while Google is revealing self-driving cars Apple is buying Beats. SMH.

And this site is called MACrumors. I am surprised that you think people who comment on this site would not care about Apple.

Purchases

First they pay big bucks for that scrap metal pile sculpture of Steve, and now they want to spend big bucks on Beats? Something is going terribly wrong at the top.

I did it ironic that you say this. Because for almost a decade THE icon of the company Apple were the white earbuds which sound-wise could only be underbid by two tin cans stripped to a wire.

Oh and by the way- the iPod was always known to have sub-standard sound quality under audiophiles.

You are ignoring several things here.

1) The iconic iPod earphones were free.
2) The iPod sound quality was indeed below what an audiophile would like, but it was far better than nearly every other competitor. It is only within the last couple of years products such as the Geek wave are entering the picture, focusing on high fidelity sound.
3) The iPod's biggest selling point was the ridiculous ease of use, and its click wheel interface was light years ahead of anything else.

Reducing the iPod to the headphones which were packed with it for free is missing the forest for the trees.

And Apple buying Beats will get immediate response while Google is just doing pushing out random ideas that will never see the light of day just to get a short term bump from idiot wall street.

Yes! Love that this is coming true and eating at the hearts of all the buffoons on these forums that spewed nonsense and subliminal racism over the past 2 weeks. A few parting thoughts: 1.) The Beats Music app is awesome on iPhone and iPad and makes iTunes look tired and old 2.) Beats Music features every genre of music, not just hip-hop for you ill-informed 3.) The executive team at Apple is smarter than you and is likely to have thought everything through before forking over $3,000,000,000. Certainly more than your sensationalistic opinions on MacRumors.com Forums. 4.) Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre built a billion dollar business together - what have you done over the past 6 years? 5.) No one cares what you "audiophiles" think sounds the best. Hilarious how all you guys just throw out random brands that no one has ever heard of and declare them the best quality. Perhaps those brands should learn from Beats and figure out how to get people to spend $200-$400 on headphones to drive $1B in revenue per year. That's what Apple cares about.

Except that yes, Beats licenses are transferable.

If this is the case, then I would say its a great decision. Apple sorely needs a Spotify competitor, and the music companies are not going to give them the license to build it themselves.

If Apple tells them I am going to give you 3 billion up front, and profit sharing down the line, I doubt any of them are going to not give Apple the license. This is essentially what this is.

things is, much of the derogatory statements don't seem to trace straight to dre.
it's like most of the fears are a result of marketing.. a lot of people here seem to think beats target audience are thugs/gangsters/hood rats/etc..

the marketing which make them feel good about apple are "think different" and this guy:
justinlong.png

some people feel they fit in with apple and are comfortable identifying themselves with apple marketing.. they think if apple buys beats then the apple image will be that of a gangsta rapper which is not a marketing tactic which will work on them so it makes them uncomfortable in a similar way as if they went to an apple party which was only serving up cristal and old english..

there seems to be a lot of "beats are for thugs" sentiments going on around here but that's mostly people showing they don't know much about beats, what their ad campaigns are, and who's buying them.. i'll be on the subway in a few minutes and i guarantee i'll see quite a few people wearing beats and they're not going to be kids from the projects.. (as in- people living in poverty can't afford beats so why are people thinking that's their target buyers?)

anyway, one decent ad campaign by apple will put much of the fears to rest by the apple lovers feeling queazy by the deal. (and this is something you'll be able to witness first hand.. the tone of these beats threads are going to change once apple puts their spin on it)

Wow! all you absolute clueless keyboard CEO's are hilarious. We the general public have absolutely no real knowlege of the specific details of this deal nor the official benefits apple looks to gain from gaining beats and for this reason this thread makes no more sense than a gibberish talking toddler teething on gimmicky headphones..

So basically Apple just wants the revenue stream from overpriced headphones. Seriously Tim?

Look, I hate these headphones. They suck, they are terribly overpriced..however would you care to explain to me what is wrong with Apple wanting only a revenue stream from the sale of the headphones? Isn't Apple running a business to make money?
